Lukas POV

My shift ended for Saturday and when my dad came to pick me up he was sober. Which means he's really mad or he had a job interview or even both. It was seven and I was beyond tired. My head kept falling against the window the whole ride home. I usually make it a point to not fall asleep till I was safe in my room. But today I just couldn't keep my eyes open.

(Trigger warning ⚠️ mentions of abuse)

My eyes quickly shot open when I felt my body being jerked from my seat belt. I began gasping for air, being startled awake has caused me to have an asthma attack. I looked for my backpack but it was next to my father. I looked up to see him holding my blanket it was tattered and torn but my favorite blanket and here he was holding it in his monster hands. "What is this?!" He yelled in my face "Are you a baby is that why you need your little blanket!?" I was still gasping for air and I was starting to feel light headed. I shook my head not knowing the answer to anything he said to me. He threw the backpack at me and I scrambled to get to my inhaler. My vision was spotty as I caught my breath. We began driving again in complete silence.

Once we got home my father began digging in his desk drawer. I anxiously watched him as he jerked my blanket around the house. I watched as he pulled out a lighter. I knew not to scream or fight him because he would just beat me worse. I silently cried as I watched him burn my blanket to nothing in the sink.

I ran to my room locking my door behind me and then running into my bathroom and locking the door. I climbed into the bathtub and closed the glass door. I cried until I remembered I had doughnuts and the big guy said I could eat them when I was safe. Then I remembered that he said I had to wash my hands before I ate. I quickly put the bag down, climbed out of the tub and washed my hands with soap and warm water. Once I was done I climbed back into the tub shutting the door and slowly taking a bite out of the chocolate doughnut. I slid my phone out of my pocket and opened it to a text from the big guy. "Always remember to wash your hands before you eat and text me when you're safe." I smiled and sent him a text thanking him for the doughnuts and how I washed my hands. I wanted to tell him I would never be safe, not now because my dad burned up my only favorite blanket but I didn't want to worry him.

I put the other doughnut in my backpack and put my backpack under my head, carefully though so I don't squish my doughnut. My eyes began to shut when my phone buzzing startled me.

I answered the phone with a whispered hello hoping my dad was asleep and wouldn't hear me at all. "Bambino it's late you just texted me are you okay?" I heard his soft as honey voice speak. My heart began beating out of my chest but my eyes still wanted to flutter shut. "he burned my only favorite blanket big guy." I murmured out. "Don't you worry about that okay? You just rest I can tell you're tired. I'll stay until you fall completely asleep." But all I could do was murmur a small okay before I fell asleep to his kind voice.

Matt's POV

I couldn't help but listen to his little snores for a little while after he fell asleep. But I was moreso waiting for his father to break into the room and hurt him. I don't remember falling asleep but when I woke up I could tell I slept tense.

I waited for Luka to text me because I didn't want his dad to see me and get mad at him. I busied myself with some work and tidying up around the house. I even made Lucy breakfast when she woke up and came down from the spare bedroom at noon but still no text. I know it's not my job to worry, but I couldn't stop myself. I ran up to my bedroom and threw on some jeans and a t shirt, "Lucy I have to run to the store and get some stuff I'll be right back!" I yelled through my house hoping she heard me. I ran to my car and drove down the driveway checking my phone once more. I drove about 15 minutes to the nearest store. I began grabbing groceries that I needed and definitely ones I didn't I began heading towards the baby section. I didn't have to look long before I found the perfect blanket for Luka to replace the one his father ruined. I checked out and started driving towards the coffee shop.

I looked through the parking lot and didn't see any sign of the truck. I parked and started walking inside bag of things for Luka in hand. I took my seat at my normal booth and it was a delightful surprise to see Lukas beautiful brown eyes staring at me. "I would like a black coffee and a moment of your time." I smiled at him. He looked around and quickly sat down. I slid the bag across the table to him. He looked confused like he hadn't been given a gift in awhile. "You can open it bambino it's yours." I watched as he looked around again while opening the bag. I heard a small gasp and then I felt a tiny body collide with my chest, followed but a million thank you's. I watched as Luka hugged the blanket to his chest and how his body almost melted when I put my arms around him. "Quickly go put everything in your bag that way you can finish out your shift. Once I finish my coffee I'll leave that way he won't see me okay?" I spoke quietly to him. He nodded and quickly ran off and began doing his various tasks for the day.

I drank my coffee, paid my bill, waved bye to Luka and walked back out to my car.

I started what felt like the longest drive of my life as I left the coffee shop, I knew it wasn't longer than ten minutes but it felt like a lifetime.
