"Hey, mama." Hope called out as she rushed into the house, only to pause in her tracks seeing her mother put a soft finger to her lips. "Sorry."
She took tentative steps towards the couch where her little sister lay on their mothers lap. "How is she?" She gently brushed her hand over the girl's rosy cheek, being careful not to accidentally wake her.
"She just has a cold." The mother said with relief. "Doctor says it's probably because she hasn't properly adjusted to the colder temperature yet, but she should be back in school by next week."
Hope nodded at that, moving to put her bag away when she remembered what she had wanted to tell her mother. "Oh. Clarke will be here later for the tutoring session thing."
Diyoza looked up at her for a moment before remembering. The eighth graders had been assigned a fourth grader to be a buddy or big brother/sister to. It wasn't really for tutoring but to help them build up their college resumes and also humble them before going off to high school by reminding them that at one point, they too were little fourth graders.
"Ok, then." The mother moved off the couch. Carefully picking up Octavia, she turned to the stairs. "Octavia will be in her room so you can use the living room. I'll be going to work soon so just keep an ear open if she needs anything. I gave her her meds a while ago so she should be asleep until I get back."
"Got it mama." Hope watched as the pair retreated to the upstairs bedroom before taking stuff out from her backpack. Sitting on the carpet, she arranged her things neatly on the coffee table, finishing just as the doorbell rang.
"I got it!" She shouted up to her mom before racing towards the door, opening it to a smiling Clarke. "Hi."
"Hey, Hope." Clarke waved back as they walked into the house. "Are you ready for our tutoring session?"
"Yep." Hope nodded cheerfully, her smile causing dimples to form on her cheek.
"Hi, Clarke." Diyoza greeted, coming down the stairs decked out in a sweatshirt and track pants. "Don't mind me. I'm going off to work, so you girls have fun."
"Bye mama."
"Bye Ms. Diyoza."
"Ok, so what do you want to do first?" Clarke settled herself down onto the carpet, pulling her bag onto her lap.
"Maybe Math. Or English." Hope suggested, bringing out the notebooks from the pile. "I don't really mind."
"Ok then." Clarke agreed and the two began their work.
It was almost two hours later when they heard something fall from upstairs, causing both girls to jump in surprise. Panic immediately filled Hope's face.
She dashed up the stairs, leaving Clarke in her wake, and into the younger girl's room. There, she found her coughing her lungs out next to a pile of broken glass on the floor. Scooping up her sister, she placed her on the bed before going to pat her back.
It took a while before the hacking stops, and by that time, Clarke was already in the room, watching the pair from the doorway.
"You ok now, Taev?" She rubbed her back as the little girl leaned on her, nodding.
"Where's the broom?" Clarke suddenly asked, reminding Hope of her visitor. "We better sweep this up before someone steps on it."
Hope moved to get up from the bed, only for Octavia to hold onto her arm. "Can you sit with her for a while, I think she doesn't want to be alone right now. It's also not right for the guest to clean up so I'll be back with the broom in a minute."
Clarke nodded and took Hope's position behind Octavia, soothing the little girl. She gently ran her hand through the girl's dark hair and watched as she began to relax, unclenching the fists at her sides.
It is then that she noticed the red tint over her fingers and carefully took the younger girl's hand in her own. She whimpered but Clarke is quick to reassure her.
Finding her hanky, she carefully wiped off the blood before placing a bandaid on the tiny cut. "There, all better." She whispered to the young girl, kissing her forehead. She rocked her in her lap for a few moments until Hope returned, broom in hand, and swept up the broken shards of glass.
"Where'd you get the bandaid?" Hope asked with wonder as they lay the now sleeping girl back onto her bed.
"My best friend Bellamy is a nerd." Clarke stated with a laugh. "He loves reading history books. Sometimes he's so caught up in them that he turns the page too fast and ends up with a papercut. If you ever meet him, he's more than likely to sport at least one of these bandages."
Hope grinned. "With bright blue butterflies?"
"Well, he's not the one buying them is he?" Clarke retorted with a teasing smile. "Besides, who's he to complain when he's the one bleeding out in a library."
Hope laughed softly, watching as the older girl stroked her little sister's hair, a smile appearing on the girl's face even in her sleep.
Suddenly, the ringing of a phone pierced the silence. Clarke pulled it out of her pocket, sparing Hope an apologetic look before turning to the little girl beside her, making sure she was still fast asleep. "Speak of the devil." She mouthed, causing Hope to giggle.
"Hey Bell." She continued to make funny faces as she listened somewhat intently to the speaker. "Ok, I'm on my way."
She got up from the bed, pocketing the phone once again. "My mom wants us to have an early dinner before her shift tonight." Clarke explained. "I've got to go now, sorry."
"It's fine." Hope waved her off. "Thanks for your help."
Clarke just smiled back at her. "It was no problem. I'll see myself out."
It took a few minutes before the door slammed shut and Hope allowed herself to relax, curling herself up around her sleeping sister.

"Any luck today?" Clarke questioned him as she slid into her chair beside him at the dinner table.
"No." Bellamy shook his head, a frown forming on his face, before he lit up like a rocket. "How was your tutoring thing? Faith, was it?"
Clarke laughed. "Hope." She corrected him. "And I think it went well. We get along great and did a lot of work in about two hours before she ran upstairs. Apparently, her sister was sick and knocked down a glass of water. By the way, remind me to get more bandaids. She got her finger cut on the glass so I just used up my last one. She's so cute though..." Clarke rambled on to the amusement of both Bellamy and the adults.
"Sounds like you had a great time, sweetie." Her mom finally spoke up. "You never mentioned the little girl's name, though."
Clarke stopped to think for a moment. "Hope never really gave me her name. She did call her something like 'Tae' though, so maybe Taegan or Taelor?" Clarke just shrugged. "I'll ask her the next time I see her."
"So, when's your session, Bellamy?" Kane turned his attention to the boy across from him.
"I'm supposed to meet Lincoln after school tomorrow at the library. Hopefully he's a good kid. Maybe he'll be interested in knowing more about Abraham Lincoln." Bellamy was much too excited about history and that his charge shared a name with the American president.
"Don't tease him about it, Bell." Clarke slapped his arm lightly. "He probably gets it enough from his class."
Bellamy just pouted at that, earning laughs from the rest of the table.
