Siffrin stumbled, paws scratched and bloodied from running along the death way. The snatchers had long since disappeared, Isla in their clutches, and Siffrin was so weary he could hardly think. his once fluffy brush dragged behind him, sodden and mud splattered. A deep shudder wracked his body, pain seeping through every bone. " I have to keep going, I have to save her" he reminded himself wearily, but it was no use. His maa was drained, his spirit broken, he could not go on. Siffrin dragged himself under the shelter of a sleeping growler, too tired even to shake the rain from his coat. As he curled on the concrete, shaking from cold, his mind flashed to another night, before it had all fallen apart, before he lost her. He thought of Isla, her pelt that shone like a bright ember, her copper eyes filled with fire, her stubborn curiosity, her soft smile, her maa that shone bright as the sun. Her eyes filled with pain when she learned of his lies, the fear that filled him when the snatchers took her, the lifelessness in her expression as they dragged her away, that endless mantra like a drumbeat in Siffrin's head "I have to save her. I cannot lose her before I can learn to love her. I cannot."
