"Who do you want to adopt?" The lady asks.
"Lacey." I say leaning on the desk. The lady nods and walks to the back. "What if lacey doesn't want us to adopt her?" Casey asks.
"Why wouldn't she? She must miss us." Then I remembered how I was with lacey, how everyone except casey gave her the cold shoulder. How we all acted like she wasn't here. "Well uh at least she can get out of this place." Casey nodded.
Casey was only 8. But she's smart. She looks like she's 10 though. Her curly hair has grown to almost her waist and she wears makeup. Not a lot of course. But she's obsessed with makeup, hair and fashion. She wears lips gloss, mascara, eyeshadow and she does her eyebrows with that color pencil thing. I know this because her and the bands makeup artist are always talking about new looks for her.
She's pretty for a young girl and she knows it. But she doesn't brag. But she's not self conscious. She has a lot of confidence, she gets the looks and that attitude from me.
The lady comes back with lacey next to her. She hands me the papers and walks away. I walked into the waiting room area thingy and sat down. Casey and lacey followed. Lacey sat down and Casey sat next to her.
Casey began talking up a storm. Lacey would only respond every once in awhile and she would nod or shake her head. I filled out the papers looks up at them every other paper.
Once I was done I stood up and brought the papers to the front desk.
Casey stood up. "Let's go get your stuff"
Lacey nodded and walked to her. We both followed. She opened the door to her room. The two boys, Zaq and the other one. I forgot his name were in there. They stared at us as lacey and Casey packed her stuff.
The two boys jumped off their beds and hugged lacey. Each whispering something in her ear and kissing her cheek.
"Ready to go?" I asked feeling awkward just standing there
Lacey whispered something to the boys. Hugged them again and walked out. Me and Casey followed.
I carried Lacey's stuff to the car. "You can sit in the front seat lacey. I wanna talk to you." I said as I closed the trunk after putting her few bags in there.
Lacey nodded and got in the front seat and Casey got in the back. I sat down in the front seat and started the car. Lacey looked at her orphanage as we drove away. My house was pretty far away. Maybe an hour or two away. I would have a while to talk with her. But I wasn't ready to talk. The comfortable silence we were in was nice. Lacey was focusing on the road, thinking not paying any attention to me or Casey.
I looked at her in the mirror. She looked a bit different than Casey. She wore no makeup, and had her hair up in a slightly messy bun. She had little strands of hair hanging out framing her face. She was wearing only jeans and a t-shirt. She had long black eye lashes and tan skin. Her eyes were piercingly blue and her dirty blond hair made them look even bluer. Lacey didn't notice I was looking at her she was to busy focusing on the road.
"HARRY!" Lacey yelled. I was swearing off into the other lane and was about to get hit by a truck. She grabbed the wheel and straightened the car into its lane. "Oh shit" I said focusing back on the road. She was still the same lacey. I could tell.
