Warnings: None, let me know if there's anything I should add, though.
Summary: (This is based off of When the Sun Goes Down from In the Heights, the song is linked at the top.)
Roman is going back to college after initially dropping out. He and Virgil are mutually pining for each other and they finally confess, hoping against all odds that they can make it work.

Roman sighed heavily as he zipped up his suitcase, relieved that he'd finally finished packing. "There." He whispered to himself, hearing a sudden knock on his bedroom door. He turned toward the source of the noise and opened the door, unable to help the smile that crept up to his face when he saw Virgil standing there.
"Hey." He said softly, his grin evident in his voice. Virgil looked up at him, smiling back.
"Hey." He replied, leaning against the doorframe. He seemed... nervous. More so than usual. Roman watched as he fidgeted slightly, moving away from the door to let him in.
"So, what brings you here?" He asked, although he already knew what the answer would be. He liked to think that he knew Virgil pretty well, they had been friends since childhood, after all.
Virgil shrugged, "I just wanted to see you, I guess." He said with a nervous chuckle. "You know, since you'll be leaving soon."
Roman nodded, taking his hands. He himself wasn't sure if the gesture was romantic or platonic, "I know," he reassured, "But I'm here now, right?"
Virgil only nodded, hesitating before intertwining their fingers. "I just worry about you sometimes, you know that." He reasoned, looking up at Roman. "Especially if you're going to be halfway across the country."
Roman sighed as he thought over Virgil's words. "Don't remind me..." He answered, his voice quiet. He pulled Virgil into a short embrace, letting go to leave the room.
He walked up to the fire escape, leaning his head against his hand as he watched the neighborhood below. He bit his lip anxiously, listening to the sounds of the block in order to calm himself down.
Virgil walked in, having been a few steps behind him. "Hey, I'm really sorry..." He trailed off as Roman shushed him, but he didn't seem angry, not in the least.
"Let me listen to my block." Roman finally spoke, and Virgil allowed him to. Of course, he didn't say it, but he really loved it whenever Roman would simply stop and let himself breathe, just to listen to the neighborhood that they had both grown up in. He was so laid-back, and yet, he was so passionate and hard-working. Virgil found himself smiling at the thought, and he shook his head lightly, thankful that Roman couldn't see it.
Roman would never think of him that way, would he?
Virgil was pulled from his thoughts when Roman piped up again. "Vee, are you okay?" He asked. Virgil blinked, glancing down at the floor.
"I'm fine, Ro." Virgil replied, sending him a small smile. Roman sighed, going over to him and tilting his chin up gently to meet his eyes.
"Come on, I know you better than that." He said, smiling a genuine, reassuring smile. He had to admit, he was a bit flustered by his own actions, but Virgil didn't need to know that.
Virgil chuckled, "Unfortunately, you do." He replied half-jokingly.
Roman's smile widened, his cheeks beginning to burn a little as he and Virgil looked at each other. Somehow, this was helping both of them forget about the future, even though it was inevitable.
"I'd say it's a pretty good thing," he countered. "Besides, we have time. I go back on Labor Day, remember?"
Virgil nodded again, "Yeah, I know, and I'll definitely try to visit you." Virgil promised, his heart pounding a little.
"That'd be nice. I just wish I didn't have to wait so long for it."
Virgil just chuckled. "You won't, if you did have to wait long, I'd be too convinced that you forgot about me." He joked.
Roman raised an eyebrow in a questioning manner, "How could I? It's impossible for me to forget about you."
"I don't know, but I'll be waiting for you here." Virgil reminded him. Somehow, he forgot to be anxious about the sappiness of his reply, but Roman didn't seem to mind, in fact, he was looking at him in a way that he never had before.
"You're going to change the world, Roman, I know it." He continued.
Roman's affectionate expression suddenly became one of suspicion. "You never say things like that." He pointed out.
Virgil sighed, he'd been caught. "I just wanted you to know, in case we drift apart, or something like that."
Roman cupped Virgil's cheek, trying his best to ignore the swarm of butterflies in his stomach that came with the sudden contact.
"I'll definitely think of you, and I'll drop everything if you ever text or call me."
Virgil smiled, "You're so sappy, but I'm sure you know that already."
"There is a reason for it, you know." Roman said abruptly, Virgil looked at him with a confused expression. It was obvious that the words had left his mouth before he had a chance to think.
"Yeah? And what's that?"
Realization washed over Roman and he took a breath. There was no way he would be getting out of this, and no matter how many times he'd replayed and practiced this exact scenario in his head, he knew he wouldn't be ready in any other circumstances.
"Vee," he started, his hands shaking ever so slightly. "I have feelings for you."
Virgil looked at him with a surprised expression, but he was smiling. Roman didn't know where the conversation would be going, but he didn't have much time to ponder the options before he felt Virgil's lips on his.
He kissed back without a moment's hesitation, only pulling away when Virgil did. The last thing he wanted was to cut that utterly blissful moment short.
"So," Virgil finally said, "What does this mean for us?"
Roman thought it over for a moment before responding. "Whatever you want it to mean, amor." He said with another smile.
Virgil smiled back again, taking Roman's hands. "Well, then. I guess that means we should date."
Roman nodded, "I'd like that a lot." He confirmed, intertwining their fingers again.
"I'm just wondering," Virgil continued as he walked with him toward the edge of the fire escape, looking over the city. "How're we going to make this work?"
"We'll find a way, you'll see." Roman replied, wrapping his free arm around him as they watched the sunset. All of a sudden, Virgil rested his head on Roman's shoulder and Roman immediately kissed his head, as if it were second nature to him.
"I really hope this'll actually work." Virgil said out of the blue after a few seconds of comfortable silence.
"I hope so, too, stormcloud. I don't want to lose you." Roman confessed, relaxing a little more.
"I don't want to lose you either, but, at least we don't have to worry about that yet." Virgil replied, letting his eyes close and melting into Roman's touch.
Roman nodded. "You're right, let's just stay here for now." He agreed, smiling as Virgil hummed in response.
He really hadn't expected this, but who was he to complain? They had each other, and that was enough for the both of them.
