Warnings: Perceived unrequited love, the tiniest bit of angst, let me know if I should add any more.

Summary: Roman is royalty and Virgil is one of his close friends, who also happens to be part of the castle staff. Virgil has fallen for him, but he hasn't said anything, because he feels like the difference in status would keep them apart.

I decided to try something new by writing from Virgil's P.O.V (Kinda, it's still in third person.)

Let me know what you guys think of this one!

Virgil stared out the large glass window, a sigh escaping him as he suddenly stopped what he was doing. He'd been working, as per usual, carefully cleaning and polishing everything in the ballroom. But something had been distracting him, growing more apparent as the days passed.

Of course, he tried to ignore it, busying himself with his usual work, but his efforts proved to be fruitless, since the prince never left his mind anyway. He'd always been there, acting as a constant of sorts, but the way Virgil was feeling... that was new.

Or, perhaps it wasn't.

Every interaction meant something to him, subtle touches and little details that he was sure Roman paid no mind to, but they were so important to Virgil, more significant than he could ever begin to describe.

Abrupt footsteps echoed from the hall and Virgil stiffened, shaking his head to clear his thoughts as he turned to see who had entered.

To his surprise, it was Roman. Usually, he'd find relief in the prince's presence, but now, the mere sight of him only made Virgil's heart ache.

"I knew I'd find you here," Roman spoke, a dazzling smile brightening his features. Virgil couldn't help but to smile back, the dull ache in his chest dissipating as his heart fluttered. He bowed instinctively.

"Hello, Your Highness." He started, Roman chuckled softly.

"Hello, Vee." The prince replied as he nodded to acknowledge him, though Virgil wasn't really paying attention to that. He locked eyes with Roman, finding it difficult to look past the fondness in his gaze.

"What brings you here, Ro?" Virgil finally asked after a moment, his eyes flitting to the crown on the prince's head, which glittered in the light, serving as a glaring reminder that he could never dare to tell Roman how he felt.

"Oh, it was nothing." Roman sighed, waving his hand in a dismissive manner. "Just some responsibilities I had to take care of."

Virgil nodded with a small hum to show that he was listening and turned back to his work, which had been long forgotten the moment Roman walked into the room.

"In all honesty, I feel better now that I'm here with you." The prince blurted, making Virgil look back at him, his eyebrow raised ever so slightly.

"You mean that?" He asked, earning another smile from Roman that made him melt, though he would never admit it.

"Of course I do." Roman replied simply. "You're one of the only people I can talk to about these things."

Virgil chuckled, "Well, I guess that's what I'm here for." He answered. Roman laughed softly, shaking his head.

"That's definitely not the only thing you're here for, but it is one of the things I love about you." He corrected, and Virgil swore that there was something shining in his eyes, something comforting and warm that compelled him to believe the prince.

He allowed his mind to wander for a moment, asking himself if, maybe, his feelings were shared, but he chased the thoughts away just as Roman spoke again.

"Ah, I need to go." The prince said as he glanced at the time on the clock, walking out of the room with a smile as he waved to Virgil.

Virgil waved back, reciprocating the smile as Roman left him with his thoughts in the now silent ballroom.

He didn't know if he would ever be ready to confess his feelings, but for now, he was content with admiring the prince from afar. Even if that was all he could ever do.
