[Warning: this might be depressing and talks about a fear]
Atelophobia
[ A - tel - o - pho - bia ]
The fear of imperfection. The fear of never being good enough.
What is Atelophobia?
Well, a person that suffers from the mental illness called Atelophobia fears imperfection which means they are scared to never be good enough meaning perfect.
Normal persons may be disappointed but they will overcome a failure whilst these persons will categorize themselves as stupid - as useless - and question their own abilities.
They will make their lifes a billion times harder by thinking dificulty about anything other than their actual fear and worrying about the outcome of a situation before it even happened.
This all happens due to their lack of self-confidence and their extremly low selfesteem.
Symptoms?
The signs and symptons vary with every individuality because the phobia is caused by different things.
Like earlier mentioned Atelophobia is a mental illness but the symptoms can be mental, emotional and also physical.
Why physical?
Well, because the body reacts with these physical symptoms to their problems.
It's the same with normal people if someone would be stressed out because of exams they'll probably sweat a lot and maybe also have some sleepless nights same goes with the person that have to deal with Atelophobia.
List of symptoms?
Physical
Perspiration, because of the stress on the person's mind.
Nausea.
Panic attacks.
Dryness of the mouth.
Increased heart rate.
Increased muscle tension.
Hyperventilaion, or increased rate of breathing.
Insomnia, due to stress and restlessness.
Feeling unsteady.
Pressure.
Being restless and not being able to relax. This is an obstacle for an easy life but also causes difficulty by therapy because the patient needs to be relaxed.
Emotional
Constant worrying about upcoming activities
An overwhelming amount of fear.
Unhealthy emotions meaning anger, sadness, jealousy and hurt, which can affect relationships.
Why do people have Atelophobia?
The phobia can be caused by different reasons.
Most likely, these person have suffered a traumatic experience during childhood.
They may have had parents who set unrealistic expectations that could never be reached. Elders could have repeatedly told them of their faults and involuntarily harmed them. But another possibility is that it's due to their character.
Maybe they are too ambitious and won't accept that some day everyone will fail or lose at some point whether it's just a game that was played for fun or a sport competition. How can you fix this fear before it gets even more serious?
I personally think that Atelophobia is underrated because it can turn into serious depressions so the affected person should see a therapist as soon as possible.
But the first thing that is important and difficult is to find the right therapist.
The therapists will convice them that there is no perfect.
Experiences
I only know one person with Atelophobia eventhough I'm a therapist.
I think we all are afraid of failing, if it's a test or losing a lover, we all have this fear of taking the wrong paths and making the wrong decisions but we do take it easier and look forward.
And, even if that is off topic and a bit personal, it's insane how a person with Atelophobia made me fear to lose but not a competition or such he made me fear to lose him.
