Chapter three

Amicable

adjective

1. having or displaying a friendly and pleasant manner.

Today is finally the day I meet my dad's family. Finally, I'm able to get out of that stuffy hospital room.

I was shocked when dad told me that he has a family not to judge a book by its cover. I thought he was in a gang with the number of tattoos he has acquired, and the way he dressed it screamed ex-convict.

So imagine me being surprised when we pull up to a mansion in Los Angeles, California, and him telling me that he works as a real estate agent.

I get out of the car with my mouth still wide open; I can't believe I will be staying in a house like this until I turn eighteen.

That's if dad would want to keep me until then. This place makes my house look like a shed.

We're not in Oregon anymore, folks.

I walk up to the grey stone steps; the door is much bigger up close and can accommodate four people at once.

While I wait for dad, I put my attention into the details of the mansion.

Greystone brick walls with black paint in the crevices of the bricks, a very dark house almost makes it eerie. But, wow, the doors are red; how original.

I hear dad getting closer. I move to the side; he puts the keys in the door before turning the keys, looking at me with a smile.

"Are you ready to meet your family"

"I am," I say, a small corner of my lips lift, trying to cover up the nervousness I really feel.

I don't think they're ready for me. Which is understandable; I'm a total stranger.

I really wouldn't care if they like me or not; I'd rather keep to myself; I only had Evan, and he's gone.

He turns the key, and I hear a click telling me the door is unlocked.

He pushes the door wide open, and I'm met with the most oversized chandelier ever.

Even though this is my first time, I have seen a chandelier.

I step into the mansion, not wanting to step on the floor that looks like it gets wax weekly.

Instead, I look around, spotting two dark wooden grand staircases with white steps.

Dad walks into another room, leaving me standing here. I feel dumb. I slide my hands in my pocket.

I didn't want to give the impression that I was nervous and lost.

I here dad call my name from the room; he walked in. I exhale deeply, preparing myself with what I would face, either amicable or hostile presences.

I turn forgetting the door was wide open. I close the door and walk into the room. I'm greeted with a big kitchen, an ample stainless steel counter in the middle of the kitchen with chairs around it.

Everything was black and white; not to be mean, but this family was basic. The house was gorgeous but not a splash of color.

I see a woman next to dad; she had loose black curls going into a messy bun honey skin complexion sweat trickling down her heart-shaped face. She was honestly beautiful.

I realized I was blankly staring at her and decided to wave.

I cringed at the action I displayed. The woman walks to me, revealing pretty white teeth "hi, my name is Rose, it's so nice to finally see you" she gets closer, and I see her brownish-green eyes.

" Hi," I say shyly. she just smiles, sensing my nervousness.

"I'm going to get the kids; they are in their room," she says, disappearing out of the room.

I see dad watching me in one of the chairs; he beckons me over. I walk over there; he has a cookie in his hand.

" Do you eat chocolate chip cookies?" he asks. I nod my head.

He gives me a smile jumping up from his seat and running around the counter, going toward the oven.

He opens the oven: steam and chocolate waft in the air; dad grabs the mittens next to the stove and grabs the pan coming over to me and placing the cookies on the table for me.

I have never seen someone so excited over cookies, especially a grown man. He reaches for the cookie until I quickly grab his wrist, halting his actions.

"it's hot," I say; realization crosses dad face than embarrassment. " I was so excited for you to try one of Rose's cookies. I forgot that quickly; I just got them out of the oven," he tells me sheepishly.

I pick up multiple footsteps that stop behind me.

I turn around and see Rose and my step-siblings standing in front of me. One was a boy. He had a gentle smile on his face; he looked around my age, light skin with curly hair going into a ponytail the same eyes as Rose.

I look over to the girl to see her rocking back in forth with a big smile on her face; amusement flashes through me for a second.

I watch the girl struggle to contain her excitement; she looks just like her brother, except her skin was a toffee color.

She's the first to speak " Hi, my name is Radiance, nice to meet you," she says, a fitting name for the giggly girl, I thought.

I shake her hand and turn to the boy " Hey, my name is Rael," he says with a surprisingly deep voice; he raises his hand for me to shake. I shake his hand and repeat my name to them.

" This is your other brother Emmanuel," rose says; my eyes travel down to rose hand behind her. I didn't notice a kid behind her.

She gently grabs him from behind her. I look down and gasp at what I see.
