Later that night, after dinner, I told my mom that my friend texted and said that I could go to her house then.
"Be careful while walking, Samantha," she warned me.
"Don't worry, mom. I'll be fine. Love you," I called out, grabbing a sweater and leaving the house. I put on my sweater when I was outside and began to walk down the road towards the hill.
When I arrived at the huge castle, I let myself in. "Edward," I called out. "It's me again."
I walked into the darkened castle until Edward appeared from a room. "Hello," he said.
I smiled. "How are you?"
Edward replied, "Fine. And you?"
I shrugged. "Alright, I guess. Will you show me around? I've always wanted to see what it looked like here."
Edward nodded and led me to each of the rooms. He would stand by the doors as I looked at what was there. In one of the rooms, there was a lot of old machinery. Most of the rooms, though, were barren.
"Why aren't there more things here?" I asked.
Edward looked around. "There isn't much need for it all."
I frowned and continued to look around a bit. "What was my grandmother like when you knew her?" I questioned.
"She was lovely. And had a wonderful smile," Edward said. He looked at me. "You look a lot like her."
I smiled, glad that I looked like her. In photos that I had seen of her when she was younger, I was always jealous of the way she looked. I was glad that I resembled her.
"Do you ever get lonely up here? I mean, you're by yourself al the time. Isn't it saddening that you don't have anyone to talk to?"
Edward looked out of a broken wall. "Kim was my only friend. As long as she was happy, so was I."
I walked to where Edward was and looked at where he was looking. From the place we were at, we could see Grandma Kim's home.
"If you want, I'll be your friend, Edward. I may not be exactly like Grandma Kim, but I am like her in a lot of ways. Would you like that."
Edward smiled and I could tell that he liked the idea of having another friend.
The following weeks, I would go to the castle and hang out with Edward. We would just hang out a lot and talk about what Grandma Kim was like. A couple of times, I brought lunch for the two of us.
Edward was like any other person that I knew in many ways. The one thing that was different about him was his hands, but that never bothered me. He was unique and talented in his own ways, and I loved that about him.
After a while, I started to wonder if Edward ever wished to have normal hands. So I got up the courage to ask him about it.
"I don't know," he said. "I guess it might be nice to be like everybody else, but I don't know if I would want it."
I smiled. "Well, I wouldn't mind if you wanted to be like everyone else or not. You hve to be who you are. And I'm sure that people do like you for who you are, Edward. I like you just the way you are."
Edward smiled. I was glad that he was smiling more and more when I visited him. He seemed to be having fun whenever I was around. I got him to start laughing at times, and he seemed to be happier now that I had arrived to be his friend.
My mother, though, was getting suspicious about why I was always going out of the house. I thought that she might try to follow me sometime, so I knew that soon everyone would have to find out about Edward.
Then an idea hit me. One day after I had returned from my part time job, I rushed directly to the castle.
"Edward, where are you?"
"I'm here," he said.
I smiled and asked, "Edward, how would you feel if I could convince my family to move here? That way, you would never be lonely, and people could see that you aren't bad. Not like they used to think. Would that be nice?"
Edward smiled slightly. "But what if they don't want to come here?"
I hadn't thought of that. "Well," I said, "if they don't want to live here, then I will. We could fix this place up and it will be beautiful. You'll love it, I promise."
Edward smiled and nodded. "That would be nice."
