Eventually, I had convinced Edward to go outside more often. The town was used to him being around, and everybody got along with him. I was happy that they all liked him and that he was enjoying everything.
It was nearing Christmas by that time. Edward would spend some of his time carving ice in the yard. I had decided that I needed to tell Edward how I felt about him.
"I should tell him on Christmas," I thought to myself. And so that became my plan.
On Christmas eve, I helped my mother prepare food for the next day. Edward and my father were wrapping presents.
"Hey, Mom, what would you say if I told you that I loved someone who wasn't normal?" I asked while still working.
"Depends on who it is, Samantha. And what their personality is like."
"Then, say that they're really kind. And they try to do their best all of the time, no matter what. And he is a bit shy at first, but once he gets to know you, he gets used to everything. But, say that he has somewhat of a disablility."
"Samantha, if you think that you'd be happy with him, then I'm fine with him. Okay? I just want you to be happy, darling. That's all that really matters."
On Chistmas day, my family stayed inside all day and relaxed. After we ate dinner that night, I asked Edward if he wanted to go outside with me for a while.
He followed me outside. There, I took a deep breath and said, "You loved my grandmother very much, didn't you?"
"Yes."
"Do you think that you could ever feel the same way about another girl?"
Edward looked at me. "I don't know."
I looked at the ground, slightly embarrassed. "What I'm trying to say is that I love you Edward," I confessed.
Both Edward and I were silent for a few seconds before he said, "I think I love you too, Samantha."
I looked at him and smiled. I then hugged him carefully, and he hugged me back the best he could. In that moment, I was completely happy. I could never have been hapier with anyone else.
When we returned to the inside of the house, I told my parents that Edward and I loved each other. They took it well and didn't overeact, which was a good thing.
"Edward, when we aren't here anymore, you better take care of our daughter," my father warned him, which made me laugh slightly.
"Dad, you don't need to scare him. He'll take care of me, okay?"
We spent the rest of the night joking and laughing. Just me, Edward, and my parents. We were our own little family that would never stop loving one another.
