"Whoa what happened to you?" Match asked, meeting up with pencil to walk to school. "How many hours of sleep did you get?"
Pencil blinked slowly, her brain taking way too long to process the question. "More than one." She finally answered. "Probably."
"Pencil! You know not enough sleep isn't good for you!" Match complained. She was honestly quite worried about her best friends sleep schedule. It obviously wasn't healthy.
"Soooo subject change!" Pencil said while laughing awkwardly. "Happy early birthday!" She said handing her a small box with a card taped on top.
Match took the card off the top of the box and cleared her throat. "Happy birthday match..." she started, but was then cut off by pencil.
"Please don't read it out loud!! It's not very good and really corny!" Pencil said putting her hand over match's mouth, waiting for match to nod before removing her hand. "Sorry, I just don't like when people read anything I write out loud cause it's just so bad."
"It's probably amazing Pence-Pence! But if you don't want me to read it aloud I won't!" Match then continued reading the front of the card, this time in her head. ...I'm so grateful you came into my world because you make my life better every day. You have no idea how grateful I am that we met. You're always there for me no matter what, and I really appreciate it. Thank you so much for just being you. By this point match was starting to tear up. And when she opened the card, she nearly burst out into tears. Inside was a drawing of her and pencil sitting on the swings in 8th grade, laughing like maniacs.
"Pence-Pence thank you so much!!" Match exclaimed, lightly putting the unopened box down on a nearby bench and hugging pencil tightly. "It's so sweet I love it!" By this point, Match was absolutely sure that she was crying, as she buried her head into the crook of pencils neck.
Pencil on the other hand, wasn't expecting this reaction. Match was always much more emotional than Pencil, but normally not to this extent. Of course, she wouldn't lie, Pencil enjoyed the hug. And she was more than devastated when match pulled away. What she didn't know, was that match was extremely hesitant to end the hug. But any longer, and Match was positive Pencil would've gotten weirded out.
"Thank you sooooo muchhh!!" Match exclaimed happily, jumping up and down.
Pencil smiled, but she quickly remembered Match hadn't even opened the real gift yet. "You should open this too, happy birthday!" She said, taking the box off the bench and handing it to Match.
Match gladly took the small box undoing the ribbon slowly. Partly so she could save it for the future, and partly cause she knew it annoyed Pencil.
Once she finally succeeded on taking forever to take off the ribbon, Match opened the box, finding a silver necklace inside. There were two small flowers engraved in the silver, along with Match and Pencils names, and cursive writing that read, best friends. And Match would never admit it out loud, but seeing friends engraved on the necklace hurt her way more than it should've. But maybe she was just tired. Match was going to try to sleep more tonight. But she didn't know how well that would go if she could talk to her soulmate. Who she kinda hoped was Pencil.
Wait wait wait back up. Did I just wish Pencil was my soulmate?!
Match always knew she was bi, but she thought Pencil was just a good friend and nothing else. Maybe I was wrong. She thought starting to panic slightly.
That was until she remembered she wasn't alone.
"I love it so much Pencil!!" She said casually as if she wasn't genuinely questioning if she had a crush on her long time best friend. Match quickly put on the necklace before continuing. "We should probably get going to school right?"
Pencil smiled and started walking towards the school. "Yeah probably." She sighed. "Although people keep telling me X is going to assign a huge project today."
"I'm sure it will be fine!"
————————————
It was not fine. In the middle of class X decided to assign the biggest project they've had in years. Match was partners with Pencil again, like always, but Match wasn't sure if they'd be able to pull this off.
As Match opened the door to her house and threw her bookbag on the ground, her parents jumped out of nowhere.
"SURPRISE!!" They yelled, a little too loud for Match's liking. "Happy birthday!" Her mom continued sprinting over to her and patting Match on the head.
"Mom you can stop doing that. I'm not four." Was all Match said as she plopped down on a couch.
Match's parents were confused, to say the least. "I thought you were excited to be able to contact your soulmate? You still are right?" Her dad asked.
And if she was being honest, Match didn't really know anymore. Originally yes, she was excited to meet her soulmate. But all day she had the chance to think about whether or not she had a crush on Pencil. And after hours of thinking, Match came to the conclusion that love is confusing.
"Yeah sure, I guess..." Match mumbled scanning the room for her cat, Sugar. She could use some cuddling right now.
Match's parents exchanged glances. "Well, happy birthday sweetie." Her mom whispered, placing a newly bought pen on the couch beside Match. "Love you." She finished, kissing Match on the forehead.
"Love you too mom." And with that, her parents left the room.
Match eyed the pen beside her. She was still curious on who her soulmate was, there was no doubt about it. So Match picked up her pen, and in her fancy cursive handwriting on her arm, wrote, hello!!
A few seconds went by and there was no response. "Maybe they're doing something right now..." Match mumbled to herself.
Match then decided while waiting for her soulmate to write back, she would work on her half of the project. However, that idea was quickly shot down when she opened her backpack and found Pencil's messy notes instead of her own, neater ones. She must've taken the wrong notes by accident.
"I'll have to remember to return these to her..." Match started, but trailed off near the end, when her arm started to feel kinda funny.
She looked down at her arm and noticed in dark blue pen, handwriting that definitely wasn't her own.
What's up?
