For a new kid, choosing the right table to sit with at lunch, is basically the same as deciding what kind of person you want to become until you graduate. So looking around that giant cafeteria was one of the most daunting experiences of my life.
St Vincent was just your average high school. There were the popular kids - mostly jocks and cheerleaders; there were drama and theatre enthusiasts; the smart kids; the stoners; the tech nerds; the goths; and finally, the foreign exchange students. See, daunting!
Anyway, after much deliberation, I decided to chicken out. (Hey, don’t judge me! I was scared, okay!).
I planned to sit alone for the rest of my life so I headed to the furthest corner of the cafeteria to the sole empty table. But as I got closer, the vacant table was maybe not so vacant. A lone boy sat there eating a hamburger and listening to music. I couldn't see his face because he was looking down at the table.
I cleared my throat and, as confidently as I could, I said, “Hey there! My name is Serena Carlyle. I’m new here. I was wondering if I could sit here with you?”
He removed the earphones and looked up at me questioningly. I gasped when I noticed that he had a silver stud pierced on either side of his lower lip. He smirked at my disbelief and, feeling more than uncomfortable, I repeated my question. He grunted nonchalantly in response and gestured to empty seat beside opposite him. I smiled, sat down and began to eat my cafeteria-bought salad.
“So,” I said while I nibbled at some damp, stale lettuce, “what’s your name?”
“Edge”, he replied, his mouth full of chopped meat. “My name is Edge. Can I ask you something?”
“Sure”, I nervously responded.
“I mean I realise you’re new and all and evidently not all that smart, but out of the entire student body, you chose to with the most intimidating kid in school. Why?”
I was completely speechless. Aside from his demeaning comments regarding my intelligence, I had no idea why I was sitting across from the most frightening looking guy in the vicinity.
“Um… I don’t know! you looked lonely I guess. I decided you could use some company”
“Ever thought that I might enjoy the solitude?”
“No one likes to be alone!”
“I guess you just met a first then”.
He then replaced his headphones and continued eating his burger. My mouth dropped in disbelief. That must’ve been the most confusing exchange I've ever had. He never flat-out asked me to leave but it was heavily implied, and the headphones definitely gave me the impression that I was unwanted. But how could anyone want to be alone?! Besides, lunch was nearly over and there wasn't enough time for me to find another table to sit at. I finished my salad in silent confusion until the bell rang. Edge briskly stood up and swung his satchel over his shoulder and started walking out of the lunch hall when i realised that I had no idea where my next lesson was.
I ran after him (which, with his long strides, was no easy feat) and called out, “Edge, wait up!” He paused for a moment. His expression showed mostly boredom with some mild curiosity.
“Edge!” I panted, “can you help me find my class? I have double chemistry with Mr Hardy and i have no idea where Lab C6 is”. He rolled his eyes but told me to follow him. I rushed to keep up with him as best I could and when we reached the class, I turned to say thank you but he had already pushed the door open and walked inside.

I know that the idea is really cliché but it's repeated a lot because people like it right? Anyway, comment on what you think and vote if you like the story. I'll try to update as often as possible.
Until next time,
