This oneshot has mentions of an absent parent and and some angst
but I promise it has a happy ending! I'm not the best at writing so I apologize if there are any mistakes! I hope you enjoy and make sure to comment what content creator y'all would like to see next!!
ps. Tommy is Y/N's son (sbi is not cannon in this au)

(Y/N POV)
The fall wind was starting to pick up and the leaves were turning into beautiful orange and red leaves coating the pavements as they fell; This was one of my favorite times of the year.
I was currently walking my son Tommy to the front of the school as I would usually do, we didn't have a car due to it just being Tommy and I and It didn't help that with my current pay check we could only afford the bare minimum, but thankfully my son and I were happy.

Tommy and his friend Tubbo were walking ahead of Puffy (Tubbo's mom) and I, similar to me Puffy was also a single parent, we would often visit Puffy to have dinner with her family and whatnot. Puffy and I had become friends through our kids and I am glad we did, she would always help me with food or taking care of Tommy on the weekends while I was at work and was genuinely one of the best people I've met so far.

When we arrived at the school I gave Tommy a hug and a pat on the head.
"Have a good day buddy. Behave and make sure to learn lots of things today!"
"Mom please not in front of my friends!! its embarrassing!!"
I gave him one last hug before letting him go, I gave a smile and saw him run in and greet his teacher whom I'd surprisingly known from high school.

"Good Morning Miss Y/N, its lovely seeing you today." Sam said greeting me with a smile, the same smile I had come to love back when we were younger.
"Good Morning Mr. Sam!" I teased with a giggle "Crazy how after all this time I still have to see that stupid smile of yours." Sam and I had been close friends and at one point we were romantically involved unfortunately it was short lived due to Sam going off to college; On the other hand I didn't have the funds to continue my education and had to take up jobs waitressing and being a busser.

Sam jokingly scoffed "If I were you I'd be blessed to see me everyday." I laughed "Of course you would Sam!" Sam was a sweet person he was always so caring and on top of that he was fun to be around, It hurt when we had to end our relationship but I knew we were still young, naïve, and that long distance would be hard on both of us thankfully we remained friends and through some act of the gods he became Tommy's teacher.

"I've enjoyed our little chat Sammy but I need to head off to work now. Please make sure Tommy behaves and stays out of trouble, I'll see you later." I give Sam a smile and start leaving but before I do I feel him grab my hand in order to stop me.
"Wait Y/N! I need to ask you something!" I spun around to meet his gaze and in that moment I felt all of the emotions I had for him over the years come flooding back. As Sam held my hand I felt as if there was no one else in this world other then him and I, all of the time we had spent together when we were kids and how even now as adults I felt protected by him and for the first time in a long time, I felt safe I felt like I had finally found my safe place, my safe place was with Sam.

Eventually I broke the daze we were in and asked what he wanted to ask me.
"I- I wanted to know if you'd be interested in going out for dinner some day... you and me and Tommy?" Sam looked down to avoid eye contact perhaps he though he was overstepping boundaries or that the question would make me uncomfortable. On the contrary, I was quite flustered and felt a rush of joy take over me. It had been a long time since I had been asked on a date by someone but i was happy.

"I would love to Sam! Just text me the date and we can make it happen!!" I give his hand a squeeze before letting it go. I wave him goodbye and go back to Puffy who's wiggling their eyebrows up and down to tease me for what she witnessed and now had a million questions about what was happening between Sam and I.

For the rest of my day I couldn't stop thinking about Sam and how for the first time since Tommy was born (Tommy is 8) I was going on an actual date!
Maybe time was all it took....
