Claire looked up from the invitation in front of her to Luke back and forth. She almost afraid to think what she was thinking, moreover, the fact that her brother stood and squirming across the counter island didn't ease her tingling feeling either
'Is this what I think it is?' Claire asked as she gingerly traced the letter on the envelope.
'Yep,' Luke nodded, he was still staring at Claire intently, perhaps trying to gauge her reaction.
Claire took the envelope, it was a fancy one. The gold and cursive letter in a gold ink emblazoned the whole piece. She took out the invitation letter inside and read it. Claire stood frozen with the invitation letter still in her hand as tears started to stream down her cheeks.
'Um... Claire?' Luke hesitantly called.
Without a word, Claire hastily rounded the counter island and engulfed Luke into her in a bear hug.
'You did it! I'm so proud of you,' Claire ridiculously exclaimed and sobbed at the same time.
'Uh... yeah, but Claire I-I can't breathe,' Luke said.
Claire dropped her arms instantly. 'I'm sorry!'
And as if she was suddenly aware, Claire frantically—and awkwardly—wiped out the tears on her cheeks.
'So, celebrate?' Claire asked, still half giddy, and half sobbing.
'Sure,' Luke dropped his backpack into a nearby chair and began to set the table. 'Will Ben come over?'
'No, he said he has a surgery or something,' Claire replied. And she, too, resumed her cooking.
'I thought he wasn't a surgeon?' Luke frowned, momentarily pausing on taking out the flatwares from the cabinet.
'Nah, I don't know the details about his job desc, do I?' Claire shook her head and chuckled.
She didn't lie when she said didn't know about Ben's job very well. That man had so many projects she hardly kept up. Just yesterday he said about opening an online course, after a week before, he decided that his crew should be involved in after school community programs. Who knows what's next? Not that she complained, because she knew all of his projects were always based on community needs.
Luke shook his head upon his sister's claim, and instead pressed on the subject—that his sister obviously didn't know about—he continued on to set up the table.
'Are you done?' Luke called when the table was ready.
'Yes.' Claire replied with long s as she turned off the stove and put the sauté spinach into the flatware.
'I swear, I wouldn't be surprised if both of us turned into Popeye,' Luke grumbled when he saw sauté spinach—yet again.
'Oh, shush, spinach is a cool veggies,' Claire scolded Luke as if she was afraid the veggies on her flatware would be offended.
'Yeah, yeah, sure. It's remarkable Ben never complains about your veggie choices.' Luke shook his head.
'Because he knows what's best for his body, and,' Claire wink dramatically. 'Because he loves me.'
Luke gagged. Chaire laughed hard.
'Wait until you fall in love,' she said.
'Not in the foreseeable future,' Luke murmured.
'So!' Claire clapped her both hands. 'Celebration. Wine? Beer?'
'You let me drink?' Both of Luke's eyes popped up immediately.
