Mr. Fredrickson

The first thing that I felt when I started walking down the yellow sidewalk was the heat. Even though I am used to this and the change in the temperature every time I come out of my cool office, it is still irritating. I walk down the walkway and carelessly take a turn to left and knowing exactly where I am heading. The best sandwich and wraps I have ever ate was from the street vendor whose main selling place is the park.

Her name is Teresa, a little younger than me. She had hair black as charcoal and a little grey peaking out the roots. It is greasy now from working all day to sustain herself. She also had a small black mole on her left cheek that is wrinkled, just like mine. She has good humour and always entertain her customers in some away. Some days she bring her grandchild with her only when the kid is allowed to go with her grandmother.

I go straight to the trailer-shop counter and ask for my usual sandwich. She hurry off to gather the ingredients while she asked

"exceptionally sunny today. Aint it mr. henrick?

"Yes yes and very hot too."

"Worse. inside this." She pointed to her trailer which is giving off even more heat.

"Little rose isn't here with you today?"

Rose is Teresa's granddaughter. She comes here more than the others and is very polite. Sometimes I buy some chocolates just to give it to her if I see her.

"No. Her school started. She is already a big girl. Last day she was adding and subtracting numbers. I'm so proud of her."

Teresa's brown eyes shone when she talked about rose. She handed me my sandwich exposing her dark chocolate hand to the sun which glowed with a big smile. I smiled back as I took it from her.

I walked to the nearest shade across the park passing the fountain. I sat on one of the park benches and stared at the fountain.

The fountain had a single angel standing in one leg and posing. The angel is made up of white marble, her eyes wide but sad. Her hands where at her sides but a little apart and in different angles. One of her leg is lifted behind. I stared at the steady flow of water spraying in different sprinklers in different combinations But the part I always stare at is her eyes, full white and downturned. A stream of water was coming from it and slowly travelling down through her cheeks. Just like she is crying.

From behind the counter a dark figure started walking towards Teresa's. I haven't seen this person ever in this village. And as an old man would do I inspect him from afar.

He has brown hair and tan and has a slender yet muscular build. He is walking to the counter and talking to Teresa. I can't make out what they are talking about but still he seemed polite. He smile the whole time he was talking and pointing here and there as if asking for directions. He is handed a sandwich and Teresa pointed to me. I quickly look away back to the fountain.

The young man started walking my way and sit next to me. He gave a slight nod as to acknowledge me and I nodded back. He opened his wrap and started eating his lunch.

My eyes went back to the fountain and I start look at my surrounding as a way to entertain myself.

"Beautiful park. Sir. Do you live around here." The boy asked.

And for the first time I looked, actually looked at him up close. He had sharp jawline and cheeks. His eyes were a dull green. He was a handsome young man. I am suddenly reminded of my granddaughter. She would call him hot.

"Yes I live here. Been here all my life" I smile back at him. We both take a bite.

"I am new around here. Looking for a job currently. Today I thought I would take a ride around here. Just to familiarise with the place.

I nodded as I said " Welcome then. This is a good neighbourhood. Jobs are available at a lot of places here. You should check the Amazon delivery place. They usually have an opening. Even I want an assistant. Do you by any chance know accounting?"

"Yes sir. I do. As a matter of fact I have a degree." He looked at me with new hope.

"Well then if you are interested. Come to my office tomorrow" I said as I gave him my card with my number and address of the office.

"Thank you sir. I sure will." He grinned as he started to walk away. It looked like he got exactly what he wanted. Almost like he knew I would give him the job offer.

"What was your name again, young man?" I asked.

"It's Marcus." he said and walked away. He paused a moment after saying his name probably deciding whether to say his last name. But then I was always paranoid.

I nodded and returned to my lunch. Happy that I had a good day and have nothing to do the rest of the day.I threw the wrapping to the nearby dustbin and walked home.

Just as I told I am uploading this early.

Hope you have a good day💐
