Meet me at the outer ballroom at midnight.

The loopy letters seemed to twinkle under the lights, almost as magical as the person who sent it. She prayed that he had sent it directly for any possibility of their midnight rendezvous becoming known to anyone else would've meant the immediate end to whatever this was. Even a simple scullery maid seeing this message meant it being brought to her mother's eyes. The thought of her mother knowing immediately made her remember the last time she got mad. She hardly had any proper meal for days and was locked up in her little room.

Although her stomach sickened a bit with worry, her excitement to meet him allowed her to forget. With only an hour till the clock ringing the sign of night, she knew she had to hurry in order to meet him on time. It has been years since he last called her. She missed him until her heart ached but she knew it was unavoidable with how her family viewed him and with him in hiding. She laughed at the memory of the last time she brought him over dinner. Mother was so horrified at their unseemly behaviour and father, oh! Father couldn't stop laughing over mother's not-so-subtle slaps on his arm in hopes of coercing him to do something. It really was a messy dinner but she missed the laughter nonetheless.

She smoothed out her dark red hair, combing through the maze-like tangles. It felt harsh against her fingers; she wondered how she let it become so rampant. Choosing the lush full dress, the soft white silks slid over her bodice with ease. The dress felt a bit loose on her but it still clung on as if it wished to be worn too. A smile appeared on her face at the soft laces that had fluffed into the air. With the sides of her hair hung back with the pearl pins her mother had gifted, she leaned towards the mirror, checking for the final touches. She frowned at the dark shades that had sullen under her eyes and how sharp her cheekbones were. Although she knew nothing could be done, with a blink, her face transformed to be much livelier than before.

The door creaked with tension, closing with much more nervous energy than it could handle. Her footsteps echoed down the empty abandoned hall despite her great efforts to run quietly as possible. She tensed at the door of her parents' suite tightly closed and only eased when she realised they must've been fast asleep. It was odd though. Her parents often stayed up late with their sweet laughter echoing down the halls. Now, only the ringing of her ears remained to accompany her. No sounds or movement warned her of the presence of another being which allowed her an easy passage yet she couldn't help but shiver at the eerie aura that haunted the halls.

The darkness had started to leech onto her skin and the dress but it all washed away at the sight of her love. At the call of his name, he turned around with a smile as wide as hers blooming on his lovely face. She rushed down the stairs, leaping into his arms.

"Oh I've missed you so much, V," she exclaimed.

He laughed, joyous over the moon from hearing his nickname after so long. "Gosh, it's been only a couple days and you miss me that much?"

She jokingly punched his chest, calling him a jerk for leaving her so long. But she knew that whatever he had done couldn't have erased the big joy she felt thumping in her chest.

"Oh who am I kidding?" He exclaimed as he spun her around the air. "I've missed you so much too, my darling."

His hand felt warm, resting against her hips. Embracing him close, the familiar smell of his clothes and skin comforted her.
