I was nudged, then kicked by someone as my eyes opened. It was the bus driver, he looked tired and put his fists on his hips. "Last stop, this is a bus not a hotel dumbass" He said angrily as I quickly got up and walked off of the bus. It then occurred I hadn't brought any luggage with me, all I had was a blue shirt, some blueish pants, brown shoes, a pair of glasses with orange lens and the hat with the ghost tied to it which I had stolen previously. It was already too late to go back anyways as in front of me stood a tall metal base, to me at that time it didn't look to different from the city... horrible conditions.
I entered the base and was blasted with air-conditioning which caused me to walk out for a moment and then come back in due to the sudden rise in heat with my body being cold, I followed along the walls and the blue paint until I found my self in a corridor that felt like a maze. I decided to lean against the wall as I started talking to myself until I came into contact with someone, they're appearance at first startled me. There in front of me stood a boy, a bit shorter than me with a blue colored hoodie with the hood up, on his face he wore a hockey mask. Attached to his back was a holster to an axe. I had put all of my attention onto him in this very moment as I stood up straight to face him.
He finally began to speak to me in an accent I could hardly understand: "G'day there! I'm Tik, whats your name pet?" This "Tik" had said to me as he approached quickly to shake my hand, I hesitated a small bit, his sudden loud volume had stunned me like the alarms in stores when the glass shattered in the window, although this time I couldn't run away. He eventually grabbed my hand and shook it for me, his palms were soft although I think I had gotten his hands dirty.
Before I could say anything another person had rushed in to say hello, this was a completely different person. They wore a fancy coat and tie, they're hair was set up with a dark black and white color. He came up to the both of us and introduced himself. "Gentlemen, may I introduce myself? Richard van Veenhoven, Spy. At your service." The man said putting his hand on his chest and bowing to us as Tik put his hands on his hips then went for a handshake as he attempted with me before. "Yep! I'm the Scout! Same honestly though.. I haven't seen a single person except for this shy pet and you! I thought there were gonna be more people here!"
The two of them had gone back and fourth, the only details I had picked up was that Richard had been a spy and Tik was referred to as a scout, both assumed I was a sniper. I started asking myself questions "Why was I being referred to as a pet?" "I'm a sniper?" "When am I getting paid?" Until my name was said by Richard. My eyes opened widely and I began to speak: "Yeah I'm Mike! The sniper!" I said with an awkward smile.
It was then another man burst in, the most terrifying of the bunch. "Whats up fellas" I heard as I turned around and was stunned at the appearance of the person talking. It was a man of similar height to mine though he wore a gas mask and a leather coat with metal spikes within it. The Spy and later referred Nicolas began to chat as I sat in the back with Tik listening. He looked over to me and began questioning me.
"So pet, what's got you all wonky eh?" He said sounding less loud, I explained to him a bit about my jumpy nature and hatred for loud noises. He assumed I was a mercenary like him, but the truth was I hadn't ever killed a person or shot a gun before I just needed a job. I couldn't tell him that as I felt he would kill me right there, but now I know he wouldn't have... not Tik. Eventually they left one by one for the apparent sleeping lounge, though I made my way outside to the battlements, a sniper nest of sorts.
It had become a bit darker and was getting colder, I shivered and crossed my arms. I looked down and saw an old dusty rifle.. picking it up I looked through the scope and inspected it carefully before I was suddenly caught off guard by Tik. I jumped up and the rifle scope cracked. In that moment I felt anger, who the hell was this guy and why couldn't he just leave me alone? My fists clenched but my anger departed, I could never express rage or anger towards anyone without loosing it all within an instant. I turned to face him he apologized and once again called me pet.
As an apology he offered me something, a marshmallow and piece of chocolate trapped between two gram crackers, I took it. He had also explained how "Pet" was his sort of way of greeting people, I hate it... I hated a lot of things about this place. Although this "s'more" he had given to me, it was something good. A good deed in a valley of evil, a light in the tunnel..
