It's hard to imagine the fact that one day everyone you know won't be here. Won't be beside you. Whether that means they have passed or just moved onto better things. Your friends will leave, your family will betray you. It's hard to imagine that you only have yourself in this world.
School starts at 7:45am yet it's 4:00 and I haven't sleep. I stare at my walls of darkness swearing I see some type of shadow. Delivered messages still pending to be seen. To be seen by the very people who promised to be there. Being young definitely isn't any easier than being an adult, the only difference is you don't have taxes as a teenager. I check my phone every 5 minutes dreading the day waiting for me ahead.
The darkness used to feel safe to me, like a feeling of comfort. A safe spot in a dangerous world. It's quickly became a fear...a dread of mine. The night doesn't seem safe it seems harsh, cold. Nothing seems right at night. A simple figure that stands can shoot fear through your body during night, though during day that same figure wouldn't even turn your head. The dark isn't safe, it never has been. Like a charmer, a nightmare dressed like a daydream.
I like to make my presence known to the figures that lurk in my room. "I'm still here figures." I say aloud, just to make sure. My phone dings. I scramble to get to it, an escape from the darkness. I open my phone and see a message from Ronnie. "Go to sleep." Is all it says. I roll my eyes and turn my phone off. If only it was that easy.
The time keeps ticking by as I beg my mind to sleep. To leave me be. The shadows swell around me, making me question reality. 5:00am. 6:00am. Time to get up. I didn't sleep. I forced myself to get up and get dressed. My clothes stuck to me like glue, like they were wet. I looked up to see a creature, drooling at the mouth sharp teeth ready to snatch whatever lie in it's path.
I push myself back against my bed, involuntary screaming. I hear my door open but I see no one. "Paige! Paige! What's wrong?!" I can hear my mother's voice. I can't see her. My eyes shoot open. I see my mom. "Paige? There's nothing there." My mom looks worried. I nod and swallow back the tears in my eyes.
I get myself downstairs and drink a glass of water before getting the car. Of course now the tiredness I begged for last night was here. Here to stab me in the back. I get to the school and force myself through the doors to be met with the stinging words that I'm always met with.
"Hey fatty!" I hear a kid yell. A kid who's bullied me since 3rd grade. I've always been overweight and I knew it, but I guess the constant daily reminder was a bonus. I push past them as they follow me and repeating the words. Words like "Wrist check?" "How much do you weigh?" "Kill yourself Fag." "Cut lately?" They used to sting, not so much anymore. I finally see Ronnie and half jog to him.
"Thank god." I whisper to him. He looks behind me and sees.
"I know it still hurts you." He said seeing the involuntary tears in my eyes. He started to walk away with me but turned around. "Ronnie?" I say looking at him.
"Hey! Why don't you fuckers go pick on someone else! Huh?" I watched as he approached them.
"What are you gonna do about it emo?" I heard one say. I look down not wanting to watch any longer.
I looked up just in time to see Ronnie pull his arm back and punch a kid right across the face. "Ronnie!" I ran to them. The principal was walking down the hallway. What the hell. I thought, I punched a kid too, might as well.
"Paige! Ronnie! Ben! Randell! My office now!" I hear my principal yell from behind me. I'm so fucked.
When we walk into the office I sit down in one of the chairs. None of us say a word. "What is happening out there!" My principal yells.
"Ronnie was harassing me!" Randell said. Ronnie began to argue back, in no time the room was one big cluster fuck of noise and yelling. I zoned it out and began to count the posters on my principals wall. 1...2...3..."Paige?" I hear my name and feel someone shaking me.
"Um yes?" I said looking around in a confused manner.
"Did you not hear a word I just said?" My principal said watching me. I swallowed and shook my head no. "You've been suspended for a week." He repeated himself. I nodded quietly and shot a look at Ronnie.
I watched as he dialed my mom's number. I listened as they talked nervous for her to get me. I knew Ronnie's parents would be much worse, so I was thankful for my own. I heard them hang up and my principal say, "Paige, Ronnie go to your classes and gather your work." I nodded without a fight.
We both stood up and I could see the nervousness in Ronnie's eyes. I think about asking him what's wrong but I already knew. He was scared of his dad. I could hear his phone going off in his back pocket as we went room to room asking for our work.
When we finally got done we were advised to head to our lockers and get our backpacks. When we do get there I see Ronnie looking down at his phone as I put my backpack on. I start to walk up to him.
Before I get there I watch him throw his arm back and punch his locker as he yells. I jog over and ask "Ronnie?" He looked at me with tears in his eyes and showed me his phone. His dad had kicked him out.
Ronnie was 17, I'm 16. Ronnie had a car and could drive but he relied on staying home still. "I have nowhere to go!" He said wiping his tears, black eyeliner was smearing on his face.
I quickly called my mom and explained the situation, she wasn't mad that I got suspended. At first she said to wait it out but after talking to Ronnie she told him to stay with us. I watched as Ronnie breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank you Paige." I heard him whisper.
We walked to his car and got in. When we pulled out I saw nothing but darkness around me, creatures surrounded us. I felt as though no breath could escape my body.
