I stared at Wave. He just kept eating his breakfast. After about fifteen minutes he got up and started walking away.
"Wait," I said, "Didn't Frey say 'until I get back'? shouldn't we wait for her?"
Wave smiled at me sympathetically. "Sorry dude, but she's not coming back," he sighed and looked around. "But, I can't have you fallowing me around all day so lt's go find her." and we left the cafeteria.
Wave walks drunk. He sways alot, and crosses his feet sometimes. He also humms and talks to himself. Something is wrong with this kid. He seemed to wander aimlessly, so I don't know if he actually knew where Freya would be, or if it was by chance that we found her throwing knives at a target in one of the side rooms.
When she saw us, she cursed. "Oh, is breakfast over already?"
"Nice try," Wave said. "But sorry babe, The Wave has stuff to do. I can't afford to spend my time babysitting, even for you." He clapprd a hand on my shoulder and left.
Frey had a disgusted look on her face. She was mouthing 'babe?' she threw one final knife in frrustration. It hit the heart of her target. I winced. Now that Wave had left, we were alone and I stood awkwardly, feeling very in the way and not knowing what to do. finally, after an intense staring contest, Frey said, "Let's go" and we left. I trotted after her, not really knowing what to do. The halls were crowded again, like the first day I came. We inched along the wall on our side, like the last time.
Eventually Frey stopped inching and we went into a large room with about six other pairs of kids. There were gymnastic matts on the floor, and big rolly things. Frey walked stiffly to one side and started talking. "Okay Alvin,"
"My name is not Alvin."
"whatever. We're Servents of light. or SOL fighters. It means that, we can do things that alot of people can't. We know things. We see things. We are things."
I just looked at her. She took a deep breath and gave me a sidelong glance like I was annoying her by not beleiving her or something. "Well, beleive what you want, I'm just the unlucky person charged with explaining it to you."
My eyes narrowed.
"This is where we practice. It's mostly begners in here, like you, because after a while you use this stuff enough in real life and couldn't forget it if you wanted to. Have you ever had any, like, physical training?"
I shook my head no. I'd never even been on a sports team.
"Well, moste of us haven't. We are unnaturaly talented physically. We build anf keep muscle faster and longer than regular humans. Our muscle memmory is better than other people's." Her voice was bored, as if she had memmorized the words to be repeated to me. We walked over to the middle of a matt.
"Can you do a somersault?"
I stared at her, "Uh, yeah?"
"Show me." Frey's voice was demanding. It was a challenge, I realized, she didn't think I could do a somersault. Or at least not a good one.
Well, I was going to show her the best somersault she had ever seen in her life. I crouched on the matt, put my head down, and kicked my legs over, rounding my back so that my mommentum carried me back into my crouching position. I strood proudly, slihgtly dizzy.
Freya was cracking up. "That," she said, "was the worst somersault I have ever seen in my life!" She proceeded to laugh at me.
"Well, you can try if your so good at it." I snapped back. She gladly marched over and crouched on the matt in a position nearly identical to mine.
"Watch." She smirked, then turn her eyes to face the opposite wall. Then, so fast you could barely see what she was doing, she tucked into a ball and whipped herself into the same crouching position, only a few inches in fron of where she had been. Her eyes still staring dead ahead, like a ballet dancer trying to spot herself while she turned. (Please don't ask how I know that ballet dancers do that) She held herself eeriy still with deadly cotrol.
I couldn't help it, my jaw dropped before I could stop it. That was some kind of scientific sumersault I tried to regain control of my mouth, but it didn't really work. "I-you-how-?"
Frey leapt, catlike, to her feet. She walked over to me, more of a strut really, and closed my mouth for me, her thin fingers were cool under my chin. Her laugh was light, but still heavy with conceitedness. "You've got alot to learn, and we start, with the somersault."
