A smirk found its way back to Zay's lips as he turned around. The boy was standing straighter and there were less obvious nerves built up.
"It's nice."
"Your name is kinda weird."
"What?" Zayden put his hand to his heart, acting hurt.
Landon giggled, a sound that sounded better than music to Zayden, and watched as Zay leaned against the counter. "Well, I mean... 'Zayden'? Kinda like the exotic version of 'Ayden'. Or a weird ripoff."
"Wow, I've never been more offended."
"Your face makes up for it, though."
The two stared at each other. Zayden thinking of the words that escaped the others lips and Landon wondering if he said that out loud. When he realized he did, his cheeks lit up a bright pink color and his hands shot up to cover them.
Zay smirked harder, "Oh? You think so?"
The boy didn't respond.
"It's cool. I think you're cute too."
Landon groaned into his hands, causing Zay to burst out laughing at the barista's pain. Someone clearing their throat had the two boys snapping around to look at the person behind Zayden.
Josh, Zayden thought as his best friend eyed both of them weirdly. "Uh, you guys good?"
Landon nodded and made sure to avoid Zayden's gaze at all cost. "Would you like something?"
"Uh, no. I just came here for him." He nodded at the smaller boy.
"Oh no," the soft words escaped his lips and Zay burst out laughing again before getting pulled away by Josh.
"Bye, barista boy!" Zay waved as he was pulled out of the cafe by his friend's grasp. Landon blushed harder and moved his face out of Zayden's view until he was fully gone.
"Dude," Josh stopped when they reached the end of the street and lightly hit Zay in the arm, "What was that?"
"What?" He was still coming down from his laughter from the boy's adorable blush and his friend hitting him in the arm.
"'What?' Do you think I'm dumb? I'd like to think I know my best friend." Josh crossed his arms and narrowed his dark blue eyes.
"What are you talking about?"
"Don't screw with me, I saw you. Before I walked in, I saw the way you were fucking ogling that kid. And don't even try playing dumb."
Zayden chuckled, "Okay, mom, so what?"
"So wh- I'm going to stab you, I swear."
"Dude, you're overreacting. I was just messing with him, no biggie." Zayden shrugged and stepped past him, sipping his coffee.
My best friend doesn't say 'no biggie.' What the hell is going on with him?
Holy shit, there's no way he believed me. Jesus, fuck my life. Seriously, strike me dead. If you don't, my father sure will.
Zayden and Josh walked in sync as their thoughts ran wild with questions, but neither knew they were of the same subject. Both boys struggled to understand what just happened but neither could come up with a solution.
Finally, they reached Zayden's mansion of a home and quietly walked in and up to his room without bothering to greet any of the workers or find his family.
When they reached Zayden's room, he shut the door and Josh sat down on his bed.
"So, what happened this morning with your dad?" Zay was glad he didn't mention the barista boy.
