"oh, good. now that george is here, we can start." though he was tied up, charlie looked unharmed.

"charlie, are you alright?" i gave him a sympathetic look.

"i'm tied to a chair. what does it look like?" he pulled at the ropes again. "hey now, charlie. that's no way to talk to him. your situation is a lot better than it could've been. it can even improve. it depends on how well you cooperate, on how much information you can giv us, and on how valuable that information proves to be." he paused, and looked at me, "george, what do you think should happen to charlie?"

"i think he should be untied."

"i agree." i looked at him in shock, "you do?" he nodded in response. "sapnap, get him a glass of water and untie him. we're civilisedhere. and charlie isn't going anywhere, are you, charlie?"

"nope."

"george, you're in the best position to know what kind of information he might have. i'll let you ask." i turned to charlie, who was watching me with a good deal of apprehension. "so, charlie. what should we know?"

"alex is definitely all about revenge. schlatt told him to leave you alone, but he won't." just brilliant, so he's never going to leave me alone. wait- wilbur. "wilbur could be in even more danger now."

"yes, and we'll look for him. that's insightful information, charlie. we'll take precautions. thank you." clay looked at me and nodded, giving me his approval. "that was a good question, george. i knew you were the right person to trust with this."

"thank you."

"see that, charlie? i like giving the people around me chances to prove themselves, and george did just that." he paused, before continuing, "you can earn my trust too, charlie. every day you cooperate, you can earn another step toward getting out of this basement." wait, he isn't going to leave him here?

"you're going to let him out?"

"only if he proves himself to us." charlie narrowed his eyes and pointed to me. "i've got nothing to prove to this street fairy." clay slammed his fist against the wall, silencing him in an instant.

"that's enough. you don't speak that way about my men, do you understand me? you treat people with respect in this house." he had his fists clenched at his sides. "'fairy' is a slur. i'm gay, too. you gonna come at me with something like that?" WHAT.

"i-i'm sorry. it won't happen again." his face dropped. "you're damned right it won't. sapnap, george, let's leave charlie alone to contemplate his life choices. i'll untie you, but the door will remain locked until you've proven yourself."

"okay. thank you... sir."

the theee of us went back upstairs, leaving charlie in the basement, and sapnap locked the door behind us. "i'm going to go brief skeppy. call me if you need me." sapnap went upstairs, leaving me and clay alone in the entryway. "hey, clay?"

"yeah?" he looked at me, confused.

"i really appreciate that you stood up for me that way. big time." he smiled at me, "it was the right thing to do. i won't stand for that kind of talk."

"but, may i address the elephant in the room?" i looked down at the ground, attempting to avoid eye contact. "which elephant would that be?"

"the fabulous big gay elephant..." he laughed at me.
