The Experiment

Chapter One

{[1]}

It was just another normal Friday afternoon - I sat at my bedroom desk and finished putting my eyeliner on. I didn't have much makeup on, but I occasionally liked to flaunt the cat eye look. I quickly went over everything; making sure I was completely ready. My makeup and hair was finished, my outfit was on, I had my purse filled with all my necessities, and my phone. I sighed in relief as I was for once ready to go on time.

"Savannah!" My Mum called from downstairs. She was the type of mum who was always there when you needed her and never judged you. We'd rarely fought, and on the odd occasions we had - it never lasted for more than a few hours. We both needed each other and I was proud to call her my Mum.

I called back to her saying I'd be down in a minute, and quickly grabbed my phone and purse off the bed before sauntering down the stairs. I was in a good mood today and nothing, I decided, was going to change that.

"Kai is here to see you." She said, as a smile spread out across her lips. Kai was my boyfriend; we'd known each other for practically our whole lives, we were best friends for thirteen years before he asked me out. I still remembered it as if it'd happened yesterday.

We were talking and joking around in the field as usual when Kai suddenly came right up to me and put my hands in his. My skin tingled with electricity when he touched me, it always did. My heart rate immediately picked up as he made contact, I'd had the biggest crush on him for so long! He was so cute with his floppy brown hair always falling in his eyes, the way he smiled at me sent butterflies-no, dragons soaring through my stomach.

He ran one hand through his hair, gripping lightly at the ends. I smiled, he always did that when he was nervous around me. I wanted to tell him that he had no reason to be nervous around me, but he looked as if he had something to say, so I urged him to say it with my eyes. He scratched the back of his neck and bit his lip subconsciously, making himself all the more attractive.

"Okay, here it goes." He announced slowly and shyly, then got on one knee and looked up at me. Oh my god, was he proposing?! I almost laughed at myself for the thought; of course not silly, why would he want to marry you, of all people? Not to mention we were thirteen. My inner consciousness mocked me and I cringed knowing it was true, he would never like me like that. Still, I couldn't help when my heart raced twice as fast as I stared into those beautiful pools of green. He took one deep breath and started talking.

"I really like you Sav," He paused and my heart fell as I realized he was probably going to explain why we couldn't be friends anymore - he was too popular and couldn't be seen with someone like me.

"I really like you too Kai, we're best friends." His face fell slightly, before he composed himself and I wondered why. He took another deep breath in and continued.

"No. I really like you, as more than friends. I realize that it's probably too weird for you and that this might even ruin our friendship, but I couldn't not tell you.. I'm not sure you even feel the same way, but I'm taking a huge chance and hoping that you don't run off and never speak to me again. You're funny, kind and caring, you always look out for me, and you're so beautiful. I love the way you twirl your hair around your fingers when you're tired, I love the way you laugh, the way you smile even though you don't always want to, the way you look at me.. I just love you. So.. Will you be my girlfriend Savannah Green?" He held his breath as he waited for my response, but I was way too stunned to respond. Kai Summers liked me, more than liked, he loved me? I couldn't believe it and I was so overloaded with joy that I thought my heart would burst. If I thought my heart had been beating fast before - I was wrong. It was probably beating 100 miles per hour at this rate, and tears of happiness pricked at my eyes.
