"Not bad, Ser,"

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

It was May's eighteenth birthday on the coming Saturday.

We didn't get to see each other, but I had read her invitation text after returning from the bubble tea shop the previous day. She was throwing a cosy cake cutting get-together at her house; and no one more than Ash, Korrina, and Drew would be there.

I had called the brunette at precisely twelve in the night like a probable good friend, and my heart swelled when she found childlike happiness in the fact that I was the first one to wish her, (after her family, of course).

She had even thanked me for doing the bare minimum, for saying a yes to join them for the mini party. My reputation for being the introverted noob who bitches over everything lives on.

"I ain't giving you a lift you if won't be ready under the next five minutes!"

I was tying the laces of my jet black Doc Martens when Lillie hollered from the sitting room. Though she had provided a hand in shaving my legs and picking a decent outfit for me, I couldn't help but roll my eyes at her pointy voice.

Making sure that the laces were in perfect double knots, I cupped my mouth from one side to scream back, "Coming!"

Applying the soft jasmine perfume, I examined myself in the dressing mirror. Sharing clothes with your siblings had quite unbalanced pros and cons. The great thing's that you get to invade their closet, and the bad thing is, well, everything else. One of them being the 'debt' that you now owe to them.

In my case, it was this glittery white spaghetti-strap dress, one that Lillie had bought for her freshmen party three years ago. My older sister was shorter than me, and so was her dress. The material stopped somewhere at my upper thighs, whereas for Lillie, it went down all the way till her knees. The fitting was loose but still perfect though, given how I had a comparatively slimmer frame than her.

I had worn a black tee underneath the satin piece, since its neckline went too deep to be considered decent. Smokey eyes, golden loop earrings, and side swept hair assembled my look together.

Grabbing my clutch bag and the brown package that contained May's gift, I scurried out of my room and locked the door. Lillie stood by the main door with her linen sleepwear on. The car keys jangled in her long fingers as she gave me a blank look, though scanning my outfit and nodding impressively.

"Not bad, Ser," She mumbled, but my pride-lit smile extinguished when she added, smirking, "Still doesn't beat my freshmen charm, though."

I rolled my eyes to the ceiling, standing about three inches taller than her in my heeled boots, as I got outdoors. "Of course."

The drive was quiet, since we didn't feel like a need to ruin the catchy pop track that blew from the radio station. Lillie was a safe yet quick driver, though she was never into overtaking other vehicles. Which I found uninteresting. There's an undefinable fun in surpassing the shitty traffic jam, it's just the way it is for me, judge all you want.

Lillie pulled up the car in front of the same aristocratic mansion where she had dropped me for that house party. I was early by just a whisker, so after bidding goodbye to my sister and picking May's gift, I knocked three times on the hardwood door.

The garden lamps illuminated the grass in a light green glow, the gnomes were positioned in a stylized line, and there weren't any disco lights dancing across the province like last time. Maybe it was really a homestyle get-together.
