The next day, Coraline & (Y/N) we're in the dining room while Mel was on her laptop, typing. Coraline was looking out of the window at the pouring rain while (Y/N) was sitting on the counter top reading a novel that she picked up last week. After touching the poison oak dowsing rod, Coraline developed a rash in her palm.
"We almost fell down a well yesterday, Mom," She said, placing seed packets by the window.
"Uh huh," Mel responded, not listening.
"We would have died."
"That's nice."
Coraline placed two more seed packets before turning to Mel.
"Hmmm. So can we go out?" She asked. "I think it's perfect weather for gardening."
"No, Coraline," Mel answered. "Rain makes mud. Mud makes a mess."
"But Mom, I want stuff growing when my friends come to visit. Isn't that why we moved here?"
"Something like that. But then we had the accident." Mel pointed to her neck. Possibly the accident broke her neck.
"Wasn't my fault you hit that truck."
"I never said it was."
Coraline scratched her hand again before complaining some more.
"I can't believe it," She ranted. "You & Dad get paid to write about plants & you hate dirt."
"Coraline," Mel began. "I don't have time for you & (Y/N) right now. & you two still have unpacking to do. Lots of unpacking."
"That sounds exciting," Coraline said sarcastically.
"Oh. Some kid left this on the front porch."
This caught (Y/N)'s attention. She put the bookmark in her novel & placed it down before walking to a wrapped newspaper package from some kid. Coraline opened the paper & found an attached note.
Hey Jonesy, look what I found in Gramma's trunk. Look familiar? Wybie.
The sisters groan before Coraline ripped open the package & found two rag dolls. They looked exactly like them. Which was both freaky & pretty accurate.
"Huh... little uses?" Coraline asked. "That's weird." (Y/N) nodded in agreement.
"What's his name, anyway?" Mel asked.
"Wybie. I'm way too old for dolls."
But instead of tossing them, the sisters kept the dolls for some reason.
*~*~*
The sisters walked to their father's study. Coraline opened the door to see their father, Charlie Jones, also typing. He looked more like an alcoholic than a father. Which (Y/N) wasn't pleased with.
"Hey Dad," Coraline said. But Charlie doesn't answer. "How's the writing going?... Dad?"
Finally, he acknowledges the sisters that are standing behind him & turns to them.
"Hello, Coraline & (Y/N)...&... Coraline & (Y/N) dolls?..." He said. But the way he said it was absolutely careless. Then he went back to work.
"D'you know where the garden tools are?"
"It's pouring out there, isn't it?"
"Humph, it's just raining."
