Constance
"Why are you up so early?" I hear from behind me. I turn to see Noah looking at me worriedly.
"Thinking," I reply and show my cigarette.
"About? It's not healthy to keep it all bottled up. Also, where's Ace?"
"Still asleep, I think," I mumble and turn back to the garden.
"Why didn't you wake him up? He would've come out here with you," Noah asks.
"I wouldn't be able to think if he was out here," I say.
"What are you thinking about?"
"Are you gonna tell Ace?" I ask.
"Not if you don't want me to, but if it's dangerous to you then I will," he says coolly.
"I haven't been here long," I pause, mulling over how I want to say this. Noah raises an eyebrow. "I haven't been here very long. When I first got here, I hardly knew Ace and I still don't know him very well. He's informed me on things that can better help me understand myself in the future once I figure it out, but how can I know that he won't use it against me? He refuses to let me leave, and I've left once with supervision from him. I hardly know any of you, yet I'm living here like I grew up knowing you. It's disturbing to me that I've trusted you guys so quickly when you could hand me over to my father easily. All in all, I don't like how much I trust you guys, and I don't like how I hardly know you."
Noah stays silent, thinking of what I've said. "I think that you should say something to Ace about this. You might be happier with the outcome."
"Possibly, thank you for listening. I should probably get back now," I mumble and put out my cigarette.
"Of course, I'll listen whenever you want me to, I am your guard," Noah snorts. I smile and hug him, then head back in through the doors of the balcony.
The walk back to his room isn't far, but it is interesting.
The walls are lined with paintings, some have werewolves and moons and others have beaches with mermaids. You can tell that the one who decorated this home loves fantasy stories.
Soon enough, I reach the wooden door that lays the man who could either save me or kill me. I sigh and push it open softly, trying not to wake him. My efforts are futile since Ace is sitting up in bed and staring at his phone.
His black hair slightly dangles over his eyes as his hand scratches the back of his neck, where a snake tattoo sits. He doesn't have a shirt on and loose, red basketball shorts hang from his thighs. His head lifts upwards and a loopy smile sticks to his lips.
"I was wondering where you ran off to, I was about to send out a search party," He grins and watches me stand there with a worried look.
"Did something happen?" I ask.
"Straight to the point, hmm?" He laughs and pats his leg, motioning for me to sit. I walk over slowly, giving him a look, and I sit on his thigh. "A shipment of guns didn't come through and our sellers are giving us some issues. I'm going to have to go personally."
I bite my lip to stop myself from saying anything. Over time of my being here, I've gotten extremely clingy to Ace and I don't want to hold him back.
It's almost as though he can read my mind. He rubs my back comfortingly and wraps his arm around my waist.
"I want you to come with me, you're helping take care of things so you should get to meet the people we make deals with. You also shouldn't be locked up on the property all the time, it might keep you safe but it's unfair to you," He says, giving me a serious look. "You don't have to go if you don't want-"
"I want to go, get any ideas of me not going out of your head. I'm going," I huff.
"That's fine, but we need to be careful, I don't want you getting hurt nor do I want your father on your tail," He says.
"Oh, okay," I smile.
"Now, since we're talking about things, I have a couple of questions for you, okay?"
"Okay...?" I bite my lip.
"Why are you running away from your father?"
"Uhm," I pause. "It's complicated."
"We don't have to leave until one this afternoon and it's Seven a.m., we have time for you to explain," Ace says with a look.
"He, uh. He wasn't the greatest dad, and I got hurt a lot," I start but pause because of the dark glint in Ace's eyes. "But he was also marrying me off."
Ace's grip around me tightens and I look at him with curiosity.
"To who?"
"I think his name is Danny Patroville, he's the next heir to the Patti's Mafia. They're powerful in the South and he wants a station there, they would also boost his power, so Danny was his best option to gain more power," I explain.
"I'm so sorry that you had to deal with that, sweetie. You don't deserve that," Ace sighs, rubbing my head softly. A blush forms on my cheeks and I feel myself getting small again. "I promise I'll keep you away from him, you'll never have to do anything you don't want."
Nuzzling into his neck, I let out a contented sigh and wrap my arms around one of his, trying to keep myself attached to him. I feel him smile against my hair as he kisses it softly and he stands up, carrying me.
"Let's go get some breakfast," So he carries me down to the kitchen and starts making some food.
----
"Wace," I mumble after swallowing a bite of oatmeal.
"Yes, little one?" He asks, still rummaging in the fridge.
"Ish wanna know yous,"
"You already know me,"
"More!" I grumble.
"You want to know me more?" He asks, pulling his head out of the fridge and looks at me with a surprised expression. I nod happily and continue eating my oatmeal. "Okay, hold on."
He jogs out of the kitchen and I hear him run up the stairs.
When I'm also halfway done with my bowl, he jogs back into the kitchen with two notebooks and some pencils.
"These are our fact notebooks," He smiles. I look up at him, puzzled. "Whenever you think of something about yourself, write it down and in a week we'll trade books and look at them. We'll do this every week, okay?"
"Otay," I smile. "Ands me fulls!"
"Then let's go pack our bags, we're going to California," Ace lifts me off my seat and sets me on his hip. "We'll also have a little vacay."
"Oooh!" I laugh and smile. He starts walking us to the bedroom and I rest my head on his shoulder.
He pushes open the door and sets me down on the bed. I giggle and mess with the comforter while he starts packing our things.
I can't wait to go!
