Jim sat in his chair in English class, waiting for the film to start so he can take notes and get the class over with, he was so bored. Tapping his pencil on the table, he began to do a little rhythm.

Tap, tappity tap, tap tap tap, tappity tap, tap tap tap.

The movie started playing and he leaned forward to listen better. His pencil scribbled his scratchy handwriting as he wrote down little dot points on the characters.

He glanced over to his right to see the class nerd, Eli, taking notes silently and obediently. His elbow was propped up so Jim couldn't see his paper, but he shifted it slightly and hit the drink bottle balanced precariously on the edge of the table. The bottle wobbled, then tipped over and began to fall.

Fortunately, Jim's already lightning reflexes had been further improved by his hours of sword training. He reached out and caught the bottle before anyone could see. He looked up at Eli to find his eyes shut tight and seemingly mid flinch. Jim sat back up again and held out the water bottle to Eli, waiting patiently for the boy to open his eyes.

Does this look good? No, his eyes are bigger than that. That's better, now to erase the sketch, blah blah blah...

Eli worked on his drawing of the boy sitting on his left. He had had a crush on Jim Lake Jr for months now, and his obsession was leaking into his love of drawing. He had drawn an action shot of Jim as a sci fi hero, complete with the classic disintegration ray. He was fighting of an army of aliens, and he was standing on the back of a turtle-like creature.

Eli's oddly square glasses dropped slightly and he pushed them up again. His arm was resting on the table so he could draw without being discovered. There was a mistake on the top corner of his page so he moved his arm to make room for his eraser. In doing so, he jostled his UFO drink bottle and flinched as it fell. He squeezed his eyes shut and waited for the inevitable crash and the following embarrassment.

One second. Two seconds. No crash, no laughing. He opened one eye, then the other. He saw Jim holding out his bottle to him, smiling. He blushed a little and shyly reached out to get the bottle. His hand brushed Jim's and his face went redder still.

"Thank you Jim," he whispered with a little crack in his voice. Jim chuckled, and it threw Eli's heart into overdrive. He really hoped that he couldn't hear the badump badump badump over the sound of the movie.

"Oh my god, did you draw that?" Jim whisper-yelled.

Oh shit.

Jim handed Eli's bottle back to him with a chuckle. Eli moved his left arm to grab it, allowing Jim a clear view of his book. Instead of notes and writing, he saw a beautiful drawing of a man in a futuristic space suit fighting off an alien army. It looked a lot like himself.

Hang on.

"Oh my god, did you draw that?" He asked. Eli's face went from shy to terrified in a split second. He rushed to cover it up with the other pages in a panic.

"Oh n-no! That's nothing j-just a p-p-picture I found o-on the internet and t-thought it was cool! It's not a drawing of you or anything! It's nothing!"

Jim put a reassuring hand on Eli's shoulder.

"It looks amazing, Eli."

"R-really?"

"Yep, you're really good at drawing."

Even with the darkened room, Jim could still see Eli turn redder than the eclipse blade.

"T-thanks Jim."

"No problem."

Timeskip brought to you by Crispy Jim

After the film had finished, the class packed up their things for the day. Jim put his book in his bag but discreetly looked at Eli's drawing one more time. He was amazed at the other boy's talents.

"Hey Eli," he began.

The boy looked up questioningly.

"Yes?"

"Can I get your number?"

Eli paused for a moment. After maybe ten seconds, Jim cleared his throat, snapping him out of his trance.

"Uh, sure!"
