This is based on the song attached above, It Must Have Been The Wind by Alec Benjamin. Basically, a modern au where instead of having an affair, Alex lives underneath Maria and can hear the abuse Reynolds subjects her to. May have themes of violence and will contain at least mentions of physical abuse.

Alex was making coffee the first time he heard the apartments. At first, he thought he was just hearing things due to sleep deprivation, but then he heard glass shatter against a wall in the upstairs apartment.

He shook it off, assuming it was just him being sleep-deprived and hearing things. He finished pouring his coffee and was about to take the first sip when he heard a girl say something in a pleading voice, tears distorting her voice.

Too worried to continue working now, he hesitated for a minute before leaving his apartment. He waited patiently for the lift, getting in when it arrived and pressing the button for the next floor up.

Alex walked down the hall, awkwardly coming to a stop in front of the door that led to the apartment above his. He knocked on the door and after a few minutes, it opened to reveal a young woman.

"Um, hi," he said awkwardly. "I live downstairs and I couldn't help but wonder what are the noises coming from your apartment a few minutes ago were?"

The young woman tucked a stray hair behind her ear and pulled the zipper impossibly further up. Then she said, "No offense, but I think your ears are playing tricks on you," she laughed uncomfortably.

Fiddling with the zipper that kept her sweater tight against her chin, she continued, "Thanks for caring, sir, that's nice of you."

She glanced behind her and made an awkward gesture. "But I have to go back," she started shutting the door. "I wish I could tell you about the noise, but I didn't hear a thing."

Before the door shut fully, she said, "It must have been the wind."

Alex echoed, "Must have been the wind?"

She nodded, seeming more confident in her response. "Must have been the wind, it must have been the wind," she confirmed, shutting the door gently.

Alex went back to his apartment, a frown on his face as he thought about her behavior. He checked the time and sighed as he realised that it was too late to phone John and ask his advice.

He quickly dialed the number of the only other person who would be awake at this time and James Madison picked up. "Hamilton?" he grumbled. "Why are you phoning me at this time? Shouldn't you be asleep?"

"Shouldn't you?" he countered with a light chuckle. James grunted in agreement. "Anyway, I have a problem."

"Is it a work problem?" James asked suspiciously. "Because I won't help you with a work problem."

Alex laughed, the noise surprising him. "No, it's-" he hesitated "-personal. If you thought that someone was being abused what would you do?"

"Is someone being abused? You have to get in there then Alexander, you can't just leave them," James answered immediately.

Alex hummed. "I know, but I don't wanna intrude cause I don't have all the facts. But I can't bear the thought of leaving her," he admitted.

There was a pause and then rustling as James moved. "God, I need coffee for this," he muttered. "Is it anyone I know?"

"I don't think so," Alex replied slowly. "To be honest, I don't even really know her."

He could hear a kettle and the sound of a mug being placed down. James sighed heavily. "I don't know what you expect me to tell you. I don't know what to do any more than you do. If anything, I'm worse with people than you," he admitted.
