Ngl it's four in the morning, I have a shitton of stuff to do tomorrow, and this is the worst thing I could've thought up. But I was listening to the song and I nearly died when I heard the lyric "Before you, I only dated self-indulgent takers" and my brain just screamed, "ELIZA" so here you are. Based off of the song "Stay, Stay, Stay" by Taylor Swift.
Eliza winced as she rolled over in her uncharacteristically empty bed and thought back to the night before. She groaned and reached for her phone, going straight to Alexander's phone number and calling.
Before he could say hello, Eliza groaned, "I'm pretty sure we almost broke up last night."
Alex snorted and took a sip of something, probably coffee. "Oh? What makes you say that?" he asked. She vaguely heard John say something in the background and Alex call back her name.
"I threw my phone across the room," she told him gloomily. "At her."
Her ex-boyfriend hissed and cursed in Spanish. Eliza was amused to realise that she didn't know if it was a coffee-related issue or sympathy for her situation. God knows Alex had gotten himself into too many similar ones.
For a moment she thought he might be helpful for once, but then John's smooth voice came onto the phone. "Hey Liza," he greeted her. "My advice is to go talk to her about it. Alex is currently nursing a nasty-looking burn and I'm probably gonna have to take him to the ER so he isn't going to be much help unless you wanna put him on speakerphone and have him swear in Spanish at Maria?"
Eliza burst out laughing before saying, "I hope Alex is okay. Tell him I'll call later and let him know how it all goes."
John confirmed that he would before hanging up. She sighed, rubbing her forehead, really not emotionally prepared to deal with the backlash that was going to follow this.
The floorboards creaked as she made her way to the bathroom, causing her to cringe. Great, Eliza thought, now she knows I'm awake.
There was movement downstairs, but Maria didn't attempt to come up and confront her, something Eliza was endlessly thankful for. After using the toilet and cleaning her teeth, Eliza didn't have any more excuses to avoid going downstairs.
She walked into the sitting room to find Maria putting sheets and blankets back into the storage closet. "I wasn't expecting you to still be here," she blurted out, wanting to slap herself the moment the words left her mouth.
Maria's eyes were soft as she looked back. "Quite glad I stayed," she admitted. "At least I got to see you one more time, even if you kick me out after this."
"I'm not gonna kick you out," Eliza mumbled. "But we should talk about it. I read somewhere that you should never leave a fight unresolved." There was mirth in Maria's eyes as she held up a finger and left the room.
She came back a moment later wearing an old football helmet and confidently said, "Okay, let's talk."
Eliza couldn't think of anything to say except, "Stay."
Eyes lit up hopefully, Maria repeated, " Stay?" questioningly.
"Stay," Eliza confirmed. "I've been loving you for quite some time. You think that it's funny when I'm mad, so I think that it's best if we both stay."
Maria nodded, her eyes lit up like a firework display. Eliza crossed the small space between them and took the helmet off, leaning in and pressing her lips to her girlfriend's.
"You're not mad?" Maria breathed when the two parted.
Shrugging, Eliza replied, "Think about it this way. Before you, I only dated self-indulgent takers, not including Alex, who took all of their problems out on me.
"And you don't do that. Instead you," she broke off with a laugh, "You carry my groceries and I'm always laughing with you. I love you because you've given me no choice but to stay. I can't imagine life without you."
Maria blushed prettily as she asked, "Really?" Eliza nodded. "You've given me no reasons to leave. Why wouldn't I want you to stay?"
Pressing another kiss to her lips, Eliza smiled at her girlfriend. "You took the time to memorize me, which is more than even Alex did. I love the guy but he can be pretty self-absorbed," she rolled her eyes.
"You're telling me," Maria agreed. "I grew up with the fellow and love him like a brother, I'm the first to call him selfish."
Eliza laughed. "I've liked hanging out with you since before we got together, and recently it's been occurring to me that I'd like to hang out with you for my whole life."
Gulping nervously, Eliza got down on one knee. "I know that this is probably the worst time to do this, but thinking that I was going to lose you just confirms that I don't want to live without you," she told Maria.
"Eliza," Maria laughed nervously. "What are you trying to say?"
Pulling a ring from her pocket, Eliza finished, "I'm asking you to marry me. Will you?"
Laughing breathily, Maria nodded frantically. "Yes. Yes! I wanna marry you, more than anything," she managed to get out.
Eliza carefully slipped the ring on her fiancee's finger. "Perfect, just like you," she flirted. Maria laughed at her awkwardness.
"I love you," she said fondly.
"I love you more," Eliza argued.
Shaking her head, Maria said definitively, "I love you most."

Welp, this feels like a shitty ending but does it look like I care? No, the answer to that is no.
