Someone knocked on the door, but didn't even wait for an answer and stormed in.
My eldest son, Elio rushed into the office with a paper in hand, and he looked happy? I'm not sure, I'm convinced he lost the ability to move his face muscles a long time ago. I mean he always has that murderous, calm look on. Even scares me sometimes.
"they found her" I'm about to ask what the hell he's going on about when he puts the paper in front of me.
I read it once, twice, on the third read I take out my glasses and read it three more times with glasses on.
"Are you sure?"
"More than anything, I've talked to them. I told them to send the blood sample they had to one of our doctors and they checked as well. It's her."
Oh, my fucking god. We found her. In the US. Our main focus for the search throughout the past two decades had been Italy considering it was there we gave her up for adoption.
Elio calls his brothers and his mom, telling them to come upstairs to my office.
My wife is the first person to walk in with a worried expression on her face. Her long brown hair is in waves. A beautiful elegant soft blue dress, her jewellery is barely noticeable, except her engagement ring. The diamond shines brightly, she never liked it. She wanted a smaller diamond. But her request fell on deaf ears.
Even after all these years there's still a part of me that's mad at me for what I did. She never wanted to give our baby girl up for adoption, she thought we could protect her. After a week where she and our youngest son got kidnapped, she understood the decision better but regardless never truly forgave me.
I lost a piece of my wife the day I took our daughter out of her arms and into an unknown social worker. She developed depression and refused to talk to me for months on end. She is better now but not how she used to be.
I don't blame her, all she wanted- we wanted was a girl. She says she understands why I did what I did but sometimes till this day hear her crying late at night when she thinks I'm sleeping or sneaking out of bed and into Athena's room and sleeping in her bed.
She sits at the three-person couch in the corner of the room.
"what's going on?" she asks, leaning back and crossing her legs.
"wait till the boys show up, amore" I say while my eyes go back to the DNA papers.
99.99% match.
The boys all stroll in after each other. Romeo and Emilio in suits, hence they just got back from work. Rather than Alonzo still in pyjamas because he didn't leave the house today.
Once Elio tells them the news, the room falls quiet. The news is sinking in.
Alonzo turns to his mom and says with tears in his eyes "I'm getting my twin back mom" my wife lets out a sob and hugs him with a smile on her face.
We found our little girl.
We found Athena.

General FictionI always loved the lost sibling trope. It's one of my all time favorites to read. I always wanted to read one where the sibling that's lost is a grown up when the family finds her. Never found one so I decided to write one. Hope you enjoy. ♡ ♡ ♡ S...
