If I knew this was love.
Hate would be something
I would have loved instead.

The peckish grumble from her stomach made her realise that she hadn't eaten all day. Jannat craved to eat a bit of something spicy. Something that would make her relentlessly sneeze because she hadn't slept well because of a blocked nose. She passed through the rows of countless racks in the library. She had come here to pick out some books on her viva exams this semester but she subsequently ended up in the fiction side of the room.

The tall shelves felt abandoned when she stepped in; far in the end and carrying the weight of ages. The library wasn't included in the renovation because it was functional and needed by students everyday. The wooden edges were looking edgy and dull. The book titles faded and melted into years of abandonment.

She had stopped reading when she was in high school. Because she couldn't manage her time. This time she needed an escape to pass the time. She was already preparing a lot for her exams.

She saw Ayaan, Shuraim's secretary. It's been months since that event. She hadn't seen Shuraim anywhere nor had she heard Ahad talk about him. Initially, she grew worried and restless but right now she didn't want to think about it. The more she did. The more it worsened her mental health. She would feel dizzy because of overthinking and stress, she would lose weight and then gradually walk into more stress. The basic greetings from between Ayaan and Jannat lasted a minute.

“You are here… In this part of the campus?”

Ayaan chuckled, “Not really a fan but I was inspecting the library and ended up here. I was thinking we could start renovation from here as the rest of the part has been very busy lately.”

“Oh.”

She didn't care— absolutely didn't.

“How is… Shuraim? I mean he doesn't attend the… renovation these days?” Ayaan gulped the question. He realized she was good friends with Shuraim and a speck of her care flashed from her eyes.

“He is fine. He is busy with work. Barely goes home to sleep. Sometimes, he sleeps in the office.”

“He shouldn't overwork like that.”

“He doesn't listen. It's not a good thing but you know he is not flexible. It's not easy to make him understand.”

“I know but it's not good for his health.”

“Now who would tell him that Jannat?”

“Yeah. I get it.”

“Why don't you meet him these days?”

“Well. I have never hung out with him. And he… I don't know. Maybe I should meet him.”

“Ok. What books are you picking?”
