Zayn sighed, raking a hand through his raven black hair. He rubbed at his eyes, wishing the bags underneath them would disappear because he needed to look presentable for Liam.
The hazel eyed man shook his head, stripping off of his clothing, jumping into the shower cubicle as he put the shower on scorching hot. He scrubbed, and scrubbed, and scrubbed, as if it would wash away all the traces of Niall and the alcohol away. He didn't need to be reminded of the two despicable bastards.
Stepping out, he pulled his black jeans on- which was quite new now that he wasn't wearing sweats like he usually did- and a sweat shirt, grabbing one of Liam's over sized hoodie, slipping it over his head. He spritzed some of Liam's cologne underneath his armpits, pulling his socks on and he fell back on the bed contentedly. He smelt like Liam, he felt like Liam, now all he needed was his baby back in his arms to make it all better.
"Zayn?" Harry walked into his friend's (could they even be considered as friends now?) room without knocking. "I've got the car ready. You can leave in two hours or so." And just like that, the curly haired lad left. Zayn stared down at his hands, wondering where Harry- the same Harry who would always squeal or jump with excitement- had left his cheerful voice, replacing it with a clipped and spiteful tone which oddly resembled a monotone.
-.-.-.-
"You sure you don't want me to drop you off?" Harry drawled from the couch, "Who knows, you might make another stupid decision." Zayn looked up, his hand resting on the door knob as he understood Harry's words, his heart dropping to his stomach.
"I won't get sidetracked. I love Liam." Zayn assured, his heart fluttering at the mere mention of his heart holder's name. "Right," Harry scoffed, rolling his eyes, "How many times have you said that before? You never got sidetracked, did you?" Harry's words held venomous sarcasm, dry humor and the poisonous truth that Zayn just wanted to forget.
Zayn looked down, his eyes getting misty and he let out a sob, completely breaking down in front of the front door. He felt absolutely horrible, and he knew only Liam could make him feel better.
Harry didn't budge from his place, merely staring at his trembling form. But then it got too much, because Harry was reminded of the vulnerability that Zayn withheld, and so he rose up from his spot, sighing as he kneeled down next to him. "Hey, okay, shh," Harry cooed, rubbing Zayn's back up and down, "I'm sorry I was harsh, yeah? But you know, Liam is my best friend. I should've been helping him but he told me to take care of you. That's why I didn't leave. I'm not pissed at the fact that you hooked up with Niall, him and I weren't working anyway, I'll get over him. But Liam gave you his all, Zayn. You were the first one he held hands with, the first he kissed, the first he made love to, the first he dated, his first everything. And you just took it and threw it away, that's what makes me mad. Liam is not something to take for granted. He's one of a kind."
Zayn sniffled and looked up at the curly haired lad. He knew Liam was one of a kind, he knew how lovely and unique he actually was, and he had just let him go. It was fitting, it was then he realized, that he had just made use of a very common idiom. He had thrown away a gem for a piece of coal, and was now burned enough to realize that the gem provided more comfort than the latter.
"What do I do? I love him so much, Harry, I want him back." Zayn's voice cracked in between, and Harry knew for a fact that Zayn was one of the strongest person he had seen, and if Liam leaving affected him this bad, it was bound to mean that Zayn was head over heels for that lad.
"Give him some time," Harry soothed, "You're visiting too early. Zayn, let his wounds heal, let him pick up some of the pieces, you know he's all yours, he isn't going to run away." Zayn nodded silently. Albiet him wanting Liam back as soon as possible, he knew that Harry knew Liam better. Harry had seen him at his worse and at his best more times than he possibly had. Harry had known him since Liam was three, and he knew that Harry was right. After all, Liam had been under influence of Zayn's terrible antics for a year and four months, and if Zayn tried clawing his way back into Liam's heart of gold, Liam would shatter completely and would be driven to the brink of insanity. Liam was too vulnerable and even the slightest touch would cause a big crack, a bigger scar, which would eventually lead to him crashing and tumbling down.
And so, with a heavy heart and a reluctant sigh, Zayn nodded, running up the stairs to whip up a letter for his beloved.
