Thank you all for your patience with this story <3Alec stood on the side ledge of the Brooklyn bridge, watching over the water and traffic. From far away he recognized the ringing of church bells from the New York institute that rung to mundane ears who didn't possess sight.
New York seemed so foreign.
He loved the feeling of the wind in his hair, watching the passerby, and letting his thoughts wander. Being alone, would always be a special form of solitude. Up there, the world looked so small, and was his, and his alone.
Visiting New York after such a long time of being away
brought out strings of the past into the present moment.Shadowhunters say that pain lives in the forgetful past, that they can choose to let it go, but Alec didn't believe that. He believed that the salvation of others existed in how they treat others, and ours in how we treat them. Mundanes are drawn to forgive and remember because they were blessed to know their own hearts.
Alec wished he could be more like a mundane.
In his week visit with his family he'd gotten a lot of things done, like letting his good thoughts overtake his priorities. Though, this week were different. He called in to take the week off and spent most of the hours hanging out with Izzy and Jace, and visiting old places.
Alec wondered how many bricks it took to build a bridge, how many of those perfectly imperfect blocks of clay went into creating such a structure.
His brown eyes skipped over the golden-brown surface, seeing the variations in the hue, how parts of the structure had been a more earthen brown. Pausing in the centre he peeked at the water that flowed underneath. Then he skipped on to the other side of the bridge, to the city's skyscrapers and the traffic noises that blared, seeming to go on for forever.
Then, he remembered bringing Magnus here two years ago after Valentine's defeat. The warlock didn't know it at the time; but for Alec this spot was special to him. He came up here all the time as a young teenager, to get away from everything, like hiding away from his feelings for Jace.
And bringing Magnus to his special place showed the warlock just how much Alec cared and trusted him.
He imagined Magnus sitting next to him. With those beautiful eyes, looking at him like the only man in the world, the only one for him.
There was a time Alec felt angry at Magnus, this only being three weeks ago. The secretiveness of his husband left him at an edge. Their entire marriage; put at a stand still. He was angry at him for a number of reasons, but he couldn't help but not be cross with him anymore because Alec in part, for his overprotectiveness and constant leaving for New York to get away from his own issues, were to blame too.
In thinking of Magnus, there was the affirmation he told himself each day; that their love, real no matter the miles or issues that were between them. And he wouldn't give up on that. The thoughts of him became stronger every day this week, and so much at times he tried pushing them back, sought even to extinguish them.
He thought they were both past this lingering stage, because Magnus told him to stop pushing him away when things got tough and that was exactly what Alec did; push those he loved away.
