The Reflecting Reflection

The reflection of the moon and stars from the dark water have my attention,
I stand still...gazing,
as if in a trance
The ripple of the current adds some kind of hypnotic effect to the reflection.

I am not a romantic person,
neither am I drawn to deep musings of time and space.
Yet here I am,
hanging on the bridge,
looking down into the abyss lit up by the reflection of the stars.

Is there anything different about the stars tonight?

An apt skill for a cotton farmer,
Is predicting rainfall,
studying the night sky...
for clouds and loss of stars
Something I believe I'm good at.

But as I study the reflection,
rainfall is not on my mind..
blinking lights urge me to look up,
away from the blackness
and into the possibilities,

as I stare down at the sharp contrast of blinking light,
against the harsh ripples of the deep black sea
my eyes get intense..
Alas! a profound insight dawns on me;

if not tonight, then tomorrow and if not tomorrow, then the next but the stars will shine.

I see it now from the reflection and I fear no longer

I release the breath that has choked me
for months and and the freedom
makes me smile a little,
I climb over the railing and get off the Bridge

Even if it's just for the night, I've found a reason to go on
