Day 3
Brandon was right. If we were going to stay alive, we needed to leave, not just the class, but the school. At the moment though we stayed put. Our attempt to get into the main building earlier had caused a scene with the Bugs. They'd be all over the place looking for us.
Sigh.
Another day without food. Good thing I had drank my fill of water when I had the chance. I wouldn't be thirsty for a while.
Leroy, on the other hand, was definitely thirsty. He was keeping to himself at the end of the class. Every now and then he'd lick his dry lips. The fact that he was suffering a little, comforted me. That sounded terrible, I know. Didn't care.
Brandon and Lewis were to one side, talking, I couldn't hear what they were saying. But they were most likely talking about what started all of this. Going over theories. Trying to solve the puzzle of our predicament. Brandon was like that. He couldn't rest unless one plus one equals two, unless things made sense. Lewis, it appears, was just like him.
I couldn't care less about how all of this started. My primary concern was simply to survive, and my mind was occupied with planning on how the hell to escape the school with our lives.
Kaymarie was busy changing the bandage and cleaning the wound on Samantha's hand. Elton, being free, came over to me. "You were pretty cool back there." he said. "The way you were fighting the monster! And how you took off its' leg!"
I smiled. The kid talked brave. "Thanks." I replied. "You did good too. Anyone else would have freaked out and started crying. But you kept your cool."
Suddenly there was a knock on the door.
I swear I nearly shit myself. The same goes for everyone else in the room. Elton shifted over to his sister. Lewis and Brandon quit talking. Leroy gripped his makeshift club and I flipped out my knife. The click it made as the blade locked into place was like a gunshot in the silence. All eyes locked on me.
Crap! I hoped the Bug outside didn't hear it.
We waited in silence for what would happen next, counting the seconds....
11. 12. 13.....
"Hey, anyone in there? You gonna let me in or what?"
The sudden sound of the voice was almost just as startling as if it had been a bugs' cry. But we quickly recovered and rushed to the door. Someone else besides us had survived in the school. Before we could clear the door Leroy called out. " Any bug monsters on your ass?"
"No, but that could change if you take any longer. C'mon hurry the hell up!"
I understood where Leroy was coming from. We didn't want to let any bugs in with anyone who was outside.
We cleared the door and a boy rushed in. He went over and sat on a chair.
"Steffan!" Samantha exclaimed. She was up and by his side in an instant.
"Hey, Sam. Whoa-your hand...". The two obviously knew each other. Lewis and Leroy blocked the door.
"What're you doing outside? Trying to get yourself killed?" Brandon asked.
"Apparently so, 'migo. Trying to save your sorry asses." Steffan waved a finger at us and sighed a breath.
**********
"You gotta be freaking kidding me." Leroy said.
We were all gathered around Steffan, listening to what he was saying. As it turned out, he and Samantha were in the same class. When the bugs attacked and everything went to hell they had gotten split up.
