I cringed and half turned away as Elton stuck the needle into Kay's abdomen and injected the insulin.
I hated needles.
It was strange. In these last couple of days I've dodged and seen enough death. Way more than any sixteen year old should see. But seeing how Elton just casually stuck the needle in Kay's flesh like that....man, my stomach did a somersault.
The kid had guts, I'd give him that.
"You make that look easy." I admitted to him.
Elton smiled. "Mom and Dad showed me how to do it." he said proudly. He finished and put the cap on the needle, securing it.
Kay thanked her brother with a smile and pulled her shirt back down. She was lying on the carpeted floor of the music room. She had only just woken up from crying herself to sleep the night before over Samantha.
"How you feeling?" she asked me.
"Despite everything that happened just now, I'm good." I chuckled. She was the one lying on the floor, weak and exhausted and she was asking if I was OK. Gotta respect that.
"I heard the shots." Kay said changing the topic. Her voice serious. "The soldiers are here?"
I nodded a yes.
She hadn't heard the news yet. She didn't know that although the soldiers had indeed arrived, that they weren't here to save us. She didn't know that Lisa and Davan were dead. Murdered.
"So they're going to help us get out of here?"
She was smart. She knew that something was up. I sighed and stood up.
"Well, that's what we're going to see."
When we came back up dragging two new-comers, everyone wanted to know what was going on. Everyone had heard the shots from downstairs. Who wouldn't. And the fact that the new-comers were wearing hazmat suits raised more questions and fears.
But Whickham didn't say a word. He and Luke had dragged the two men into an empty classroom and closed the door. I had taken the medication straight to Kay. Lisa would have wanted all those who were injured to be seen about first before anything else.
Now, as I was heading to the class with the soldiers and Brandon joined me.
"Is it true? They killed Lisa and the other guy?"
I nodded grimly. Brandon muttered a curse under his breathe. I cast a look at him.
"You knew that this was going to happen?" I asked. My tone gave the question the harshness of an accusation.
"Yes." Brandon replied simply. "I did say it, didn't I. I've never heard of anyone getting rescued from a quarantine."
We reached the room and walked in just in time to see Whickham rip the hood of the hazmat suit off one of the guys. He cursing and struggling against it, but the hood came off anyway.
The other guy already had his suit stripped away. Both men sat in chairs, their hands zip-tied behind them.Aside from Whickham, the two soldiers, Brandon and myself, there were four others.
Leroy. Luke. Nichola and Lewis.I gave Lewis a second look. I hadn't seen much of him these last two days and I didn't like that. I thought something suspicious, but left it alone and regarded Luke and Whickham. They had the guns. The electronics teacher now had the assault rifle and Luke the pistol.
Leroy stood to the corner of the room, his eyes shifting over everything, often landing on the guns.
When Whickham was done taking the suit off the other guy he stood back, looking at each of them with anger.
