Hawkins, Indiana

October 1984

"Give her a chance, Nancy." Steve Harrington and Nancy Wheeler got distracted from editing his college admissions essay when the Wakandan exchange student that already shook up Hawkins arrived in the parking lot. The Harrington boy had insisted on driving her because The Harringtons were her host family. Well, Steve's parents told him she would be arriving two months ago as part of some lucrative business deal. It seemed to him Nancy was a bit jealous, though he'd never say it to her face.

"I'm not sure you're understanding how bad this could be for us, Steve. She just suddenly shows up here and starts asking very specific questions about Will Byers? That is 100% suspicious, Steve."

"Relax, Nance. She's from Africa. She literally doesn't know shit about America and everyone asks questions about Will."

"And why does she have to stay at your house? Charity?" Nancy scoffed in disbelief, "She's a damn princess."

"I'm not a charity case." Tiana said from behind her, "I'm also not entirely poor. I'm royalty where I come from, Steven."

Steve snorted "What? Are you some sort of princess or something?"

"Something like that." and she spun round on her heel, running straight into a blue camaro. So much for blending in. "Fucking Americans."

Will Byers was suspicious of the exchange student. He didn't really know why but he recognized her.

"You keep staring at the new girl." Mike said.

"MadMax?"

"No. Everytime I look at you, you're looking at Tiana."

"Doesn't she seem a little off?" Mike didn't reply and redirected his attention back to spying on MadMax because they all had nothing better to do.

As soon as Carol and Tommy heard Tiana was from another country, everyone was attracted to her. Carol literally was obsessed with this girl. She was the first person to approach her. "Hi. I'm Carol. Welcome to Hawkins. You should join us for lunch sometime. I've never been out of the country and-"

"You can speak normally." Tiana spoke with her accent, "I'm fluent in 8 languages. Including English. But thank you so much for the warm welcome and showing that Americans are-" Jonathan Byers of all people stopped her from continuing her insult. He was acting as her guide around town mostly because his mother asked him to but he felt a strange connection between her and Will. It wasn't particularly a bad thing because Will wasn't weird around her like he was with other people.

"Are you insane?" Jonathan said, "word spreads fast here. You can't go around picking fights."

Tiana shrugged, "I wasn't looking for trouble. I was telling her a little bit about myself after she insulted me."

Wakanda, 1983

Being a princess had more rules than any other career. Apparently, speaking your mind wasn't exactly princess-like even if no one knew how much your country was thriving.

"You're in my lab again, brother. In those ridiculous shoes."

"I have a mission for you. It involves going to America for the Hawkins case I had you investigating."

"America? For a mission and not a concert?" Tiana breathed, "It's not what I expected but it's still America."

"You know everything already. I've spoken to Chief Hopper from the file and he is your ally." t'Challa told her, "remember, we do this for wakanda without hesitation. You go in October 1984."
