Meerut is one of the most well-known cities in the state of Uttar Pradesh, and also a part of the National Capital Region (NCR). It is a city marked for its developing urban spaces, growing infrastructure and ancient settlements belonging to the Indus Valley Civilisation. Being quite an old city, Meerut had been a witness to many ups and downs. And, it does have a few places that connect all those unforeseen events to spooky tales, thus spreading the belief that Meerut is home to a few haunted places such as the GP Block. This place is known for its three buildings that have been abandoned for many decades. Walls ravaged by time, wild foliage covering the buildings from all quarters and an air of eeriness defines the nature of GP Block, the area of ill-repute in Meerut.
The popular word has been that the GP Block is haunted by evil spirits. Sightings of a woman sitting on the roof of the building had been reported in the past; so has been the sight of women wearing red garments showing up in their ghostly form in and around the building. Others have reported seeing four men drinking inside the property or at its rooftop. Obviously, all these incidents led to the belief that this place is haunted, thus making some afraid of venturing near and making others curious. Reportedly, people who were interested in witnessing the paranormal sightings have also visited GP Block.
The property in GP Block has no private ownership; rather, it belongs to the Indian defence forces. Initially, the army would use the buildings as a sub-area office. However, in 1950s, the property was vacated, and a junior officer came to occupy it as his residence until the later part of the decade. Ever since, no one has officially moved into the buildings.
The army had appointed a few caretakers to take care of the ground floor of one of the three buildings; but it turned out that the greedy caretakers began renting out the premises to young couples and gamblers for a few hours.
Eventually, the caretakers had to be fired from the job because the cantonment had had enough of it. And now, the cantonment board has installed a big iron gate at the entrance to ward off the miscreants.
