❝𝐓𝐎𝐓𝐓𝐄𝐍𝐇𝐀𝐌 𝐇𝐎𝐓𝐒𝐏𝐔𝐑 𝐖𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐍 players have decided to go on strike following the events of their game against 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 where a fracas between 𝐊𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐢 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐫 and 𝐉𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐚 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐢 had ensued in the latter player being outed as a racist.
The FA Player, home of women's English football broadcasting, have apologised as the derogatory slurs had been aired live for millions of viewers to hear and have thenceforth been bleeped on the platform due to the youth accounting for a large percentage of their audience.
Contrastingly, BT Sport, who had also aired the fifth round FA Cup match, have kept the slurs within the audio that has been clipped on their YouTube platform, and it has racked up eighteen million views since the incident occurred. Many social media users have voiced the importance of displaying the gravity of the situation as it could've been interpreted differently if there were any 'missing pieces to the puzzle'. Viewer discretion is advised beforehand.
𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐢 has since released an apology on Twitter that has received global backlash from various footballers, including 𝐍𝐞𝐲𝐦𝐚𝐫 𝐉𝐫., 𝐏𝐚𝐮𝐥 𝐏𝐨𝐠𝐛𝐚 and 𝐑𝐚𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐦 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠, outraged that she had dubbed the slurs she had spoken as a 'shock' because she was 'heavily influenced by emotion'.
Her London club has taken some time to deliberate her actions during their game against 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝, and a fortnight later have still not come to a conclusion on whether or not her captaincy should remain. It may be due to the fact that prior to the incident, 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐢 was applauded by many pundits for her resilient nature, having captained 𝐒𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐬 to promotion from third division football all the way to the first over the course of three years.
The footballing community, however, are enraged and see no deliberation necessary, expressing their views via Twitter that 'she should NOT be captain' (𝐍𝐞𝐲𝐦𝐚𝐫) and that 'the captain armband needs to go!' (𝐏𝐨𝐠𝐛𝐚).
The 𝐒𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐬 players agree, it seems, as they have also come out and made a statement, declaring that they will not play their next fixture until 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐢 is stripped of the armband in a stance against racism.
More recently, 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 target 𝐉𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐨 has also liked and retweeted a Tweet from a fan saying, "It's so weird that every time I open up my social media, I'm seeing news articles trying to antagonise a young black woman. You deluded journalists need to leave Kalani Sinclair alone and shame the actual person who was at fault— the RACIST— instead."
