Music can stir up emotions and creative juices, and can help many people get into the writing flow. It's good to experiment with different types of music to see what works best for you. So challenge yourself: throw on a piece of music at random (use Shuffle in your music library) and start freewriting! What characters come to mind? What emotions does the music stir up? What locations do you visualize?

You can also do this with instrumental music, which tends to works best best for writing, as vocals can confuse and distract from one's own writing. Here's a warm-up for instrumental music:

‣ Choose 1-3 topics that you would like to write about. These could be ideas/themes, or sentence starters that will focus your writing.

‣ Choose music that will be evocative of the topics. For example, if one topic is to write about a wonderful day, you could choose some light and happy music.

‣ Once the music begins you start writing, and must continue writing until the music stops.

Next, try this warm-up with film scores! Film scores can be extremely evocative, and are useful for helping writers channel a sense of place, action, and emotion.

‣ Find a track from a film score. YouTube is a great place to start looking, here is a link to a playlist with over 200 film scores to choose from → https://youtu.be/maA5bCx3_Jk

‣ Play a film score at random, and write about the scene that you think the composer is trying to create. You can choose whether you want to just write about setting, or to also describe characters and action, or you can simply just write what you "see".

‣ After you're done, find out more about about the scene in the movie that the score accompanied, and you can think about how well the composer evoked the atmosphere and action!
