- The Well -
Judy often wondered how she would die. If she would have her last breath alone in some sort of wooden house where she spent more then sixty years of her life, on a chair she sat during all that time. Or that she would actually fall in love and her soul mate would be by her side when she dies.
Would she die in Oswell or elsewhere if she ever had the courage to leave. She always wondered.
Every time she would be curled up taking the beatings of the towns kids that ganged up on her she would wonder if it was the end for her “is this how I will die” she would always ask to no one in particular.
Often when she would starve so much from not eating for days and pass out in the end she would always wonder if this was how God had planned things for her and if she would wake up, and she always did.
But this time, she doubted she would. She was falling in a well after all, of unknown height but deep enough to kill someone, and nothing was suggesting she would be landing in water and in case she survived, how will she get out, the entrance was closed, she would just die of her injuries and rot there.
All that, went through her mind in an instant, she saw her life flash before her eyes. She has pictured it a thousand times but none of them ended by her being pushed in a well she does not know whether it is dried up or not and by mysterious hands at that!
Her thoughts were stopped when she passed through what felt like a warm embrace then she felt herself drift away.
She did not feel her body splashing in water, or crash on the ground nor did she hear the violent sound of it or is it that she could not feel it because it was so intense.
But she had to say, death was pretty smooth, so nice and soft, though it did smell weird like...”Fur?” OK what’s going on here she asks more to herself while opening her eyes, standing on her arms and looking around. She came eye to eye with big grey eyes “woah!” Judy shouts as she falls backwards on her hands, startled. “My apologies for scaring you. I had no intention of doing so” the thing said. Judy had a hard time processing what was happening at this very moment.
For in her entire life, she had never seen a wolf this big, and the only wolf she’s seen so far was the one in picture books that’s how she was able to recognize it. And here she was, sitting in the paws of a big dark grey wolf.
After some thought she finally concluded “ I am dead and this is me in heaven, this is the only realistic explanation I can come up with”
“what! No you’re not dead and what makes you think you would go to heaven if you were to die?” the wolf asked while laughing “because I will be 18 soon and I have never kissed anyone before, lied nor killed and I read that you will go to heaven if I did none of those. And your paw is so soft I can only think of it as pure bliss in heaven” Judy continued.“thank you for the compliment though I am interested in the kind of book you read but I assure you, you are still very much alive and have blood flowing in your body. That’s the hole you came from, I just caught you on time before you reached the ground. If I didn’t, then you have had a horrible death yes.” The furred animal explained showing the hole and putting her down at the same time.
“Then... Thank you for saving me, I owe you my life”. The wolf just smiled and lied its head on its now crossed arms. The ginger head girl kept staring at the wolf so much that it disturbed him “have you never seen a wolf in your life girl?”
“no” was the girl’s answer, which did not convince the wolf because even though it was faint, he could sense some kind of aura on her but he kept quiet, she must have had her reasons.Judy had no idea how much time she spent in the “well” already but she learned a lot of things such as the wolf’s name “I am Clay Willows of the Full Red Moon pack” he had answered when she asked for his name “that is the way we present ourselves from where I come from” he added when she was still looking at him weirdly “oh I see, well I am Judy Skats from Oswell town” she had joked before bursting out of laughter.
“so you mean to tell me that you have a human form and that there are others like you, witches and vampires exist as well? Wow” Judy had asked with excitement visible in her voice of all the wonders of the world and Clay could not believe he was giving a class on supernatural creatures to a clueless human girl right now, she had absolutely no clue about the world around her but he could not blame her for from what she had explained to him she did not remember her parents and she never left her town.
“so it was your reflection lady Mcrell and I saw in her garden because it was your last cry of help to remove these chains. Is that it if I summarise what you just explained.”
“ yes that is pretty much about it but stop saying it was a cry of help, I did it for a good reason, I need help with something” Clay agreed mostly against his will.
“the chains right? Yeah let me help you with that” Judy suggested while approaching the giant chains holding him down.“if it was that simple I would of done so a long time ago girl”
“these chains have been holding me down for more than 10 years now and there has been other wolves before me and there will be some after me unless we do something about it” the giant animal explained “it is no use Judy, you can not free me, these are magical chains that drain my powers not just anybody can break them you have to use the key or you must be more powerful or equally powerful than the one responsible for this” he tried to stop her when she was forcing the locks even though they were burning her.
“but I have to try, is it not why you made me come here” Judy was now on the verge of crying, she who never cried was now going to, but it was not from the pain she felt, nor from what has happened to her until now no, she felt sad for the wolf, how could someone be this evil, she felt powerless.
Her first ever friend was imprisoned and there was nothing she could do. “calm down Judy, listen to me first. It is useless to try and save me now, I am reaching my limit of life energy therefore I will most likely die soon even if I am freed I will not survive long. So please hear my dying wish will you” Clay said hesitantly. He had no more choices than to ask her, he knew it was dangerous but he also had faith she would make it.
To listen to her new friend, Judy reluctantly let go of the chains and went to sit in front of him on the floor.
“I need you to deliver a message for me, that is actually my cry for help” Clay jokingly said with a sad smile on his face but he soon noticed that the person he was trying to make laugh was not even smiling. He then then decided it was wiser to continue his request. “so can you do that for me? Consider it my dying wish and your debt payment” the wolf said “of course I will do it for you so tell me what it is you need me to do. And I am not letting you die!”
“I told you that I came from the Full Moon Pack right? I will direct you to them, there, you will look for my brother there, Calev Willows and give him my message. Tell him about the approaching danger and what have been happening to our kind. Please let them know and tell them to prepare” when Clay had finished his speech, Judy was heart broken, was there really no way to save him? “tell me who did this to you” she pleaded him “to tell you the truth, I do not know, I just remember waking up in here and chained like this one day. Every time I would try to remember, I would feel like my head is going to explode and it would take a part of my memories along with it, so I just let it go... I know that person will be looking for another wolf to replace me, if they are not already doing it so I will try my hardest to hold on until you deliver the message for me. Of course I will understand if you refuse, it will be dangerous after all” Clay stated ready for a rejection but he was up for a surprise when Judy stood up from her position and told him that she would never let him die and that she would be honoured to do it for him.
The joy and relief that went through him that moment, only he could describe it. He then explained to Judy how to find his pack unbeknownst of the danger lurking around.
