Gravel. Rocks. Smell of summer. I reach my hand up to move my brown hair out of my eyes. I'm breathing hard. Rushing to get to my destination. I can't be late. Never. Alleyway. I need to find the alleyway. I go through the busy streets smelling food and hearing laughter. My feet pound against the gravel.
I follow the route, knowing it by memory, I could get here with a blindfold. Dammit, why do they always notify me right beforehand. The first and only time I was ever late, they beat me, causing the formation of two black eyes. Told me that it would teach me formality on being on time. I took the hint and ran with it. As much as I'm running now.
I get to the alleyway. It's dark and reminds me of horrors that can possibly take place if you're here at the wrong time. I look to the left and right of me. So he's not here yet. Formality my ass. I lean up against the wall behind me, fidgeting with the seams on my gloves. They're worn and old. I'm going to need to buy new ones some time soon.
I hear footsteps to the left of me, leading into the darker part of the alley, walking my way. I stand up properly. Straight and alert. "Miss Lancaster," the voice says. I never knew his name. Never wanted to know. He hands me a small device. I take it and hide it in my cloak. I slightly nod and I turn around and leave.
It's getting close to nighttime and I need to be back home. I walk through the busy streets, trying not to be noticed. And then I smell it. The nice just out of the oven smell. My nose leads the way as I'm distracted by the aura of cinnamon and chocolate.
I see a small vendor of a woman much older than me selling small cakes. Rosie and Seb will kill me if I don't get them anything. I sigh and check the amount of coins I have in my bag. "Ma'am, may I have a mini chocolate cake?" I ask the lady. "Well of course dearie." She reaches for a brown bag and places a pre-wrapped cake in the bag. She hands it to me and I hand her the amount.
I then nod and leave, on my way home.
I feel sore. The strides in my legs feeling overwhelmed. I did too much yesterday. I roll my shoulders and feel the dull ache in my mid back. I lean back and twist, hearing a loud pop. Much better.
The walk doesn't take long. A good amount to work through my soreness. I find the building, dull hues laced in with gold accents. This city always providing the look of gold. I always found it pretty. A nice little touch. I walk up the stairs, in between the neighboring building and I unlock the door using my key.
As soon as I enter, I turn to lock it. "Big sis!" I hear Rosie call. I see her run over to me, her blond hair bound up and bouncing. I lean down and she runs into my hug.
"Hi Rosalind. I brought you and Seb something," I say to her, handing her the bag. Little Rosie oohs when she opens the brown bag. She gasps and says "Yes! Thanks so much!"
Rosie runs off and yells for Sebastian that I got them cake. I smile to myself and remove my cloak. "Annalise," you hear your sister say your name, her voice smooth and relaxing.
"Ellia." I hug my twin closely. "You got one, didn't you," she asks. Worry lacing her words. I nod somberly and say "We can talk about it tomorrow, if I must. For now, tell me what's for dinner, I'm starving."
"I'm just cooking up some stew, nothing extravagant. I took the younglings out today. We went and looked around the place, of course nothing new and nothing old."
"Thank you. If you need me, you'll know where to find me," I tell her. She nods and I walk through the area, the wood creaking under my worn boots. I'll need a knew pair of those too.
I climb through the window, sitting facing the indoors. I put my hand up on the seal and lift myself up, placing my foot on the rim.
I then haul myself up and onto the roof, a nice safe haven I've made for myself.
