PHOENIX LOOKS AT HERSELF in the mirror

PHOENIX LOOKS AT HERSELF in the mirror. Bruises here, bruises there, and a bandage on her temple with a few blood stains out of it: she looked like a mess. Dark circles under her eyes sink deeper and deeper into her skull, in contrast to her pale skin, there is an undeniable resemblance to a fresh corpse.

"Still hot," she mumbled to herself, slightly flinching when she walks over to the edge of her door. It was nighttime at this point, and she's been stuck in her room for the whole day (except for when she took showers) and the familiar sound of footsteps disappeared now, which meant her father was back at his workplace.

But just to take precautionary measures, Phoenix placed her ear against the wooden door and listened for anything; but after a few minutes of hearing nothing, she took this as a positive sign and walked over towards the kitchen to eat a proper meal. She was starving.

For a moment, the world was completely still as she ate her mac and cheese. Nothing moved, not a leaf quivered, but over the silence, Phoenix could hear something. The sound of a machine. A car.

The sound of the wind among the trees suddenly stopped. Phoenix sat in her seat as she heard the sound of a car door slamming shut. Why is he here? What the hell is happening to his schedule?

The footsteps were louder. Another creak, another shuffle, just down the front door. Now only seconds away.

The girl jumped in her seat when she heard the door pounding loudly. "Nixie! It's Kate!"

"And Simon!" Nixie could notice that his voice was a bit shaky.

"We need to go to Deena's! Now! Hurry!"

There were some questions running in her head, but Phoenix wasted no time and bolted to her bedroom, wearing shorts and a random T-shirt she had in her closet. The girl wanted to get out of the house ever since she woke up, which made the surprise plan thrilling to her. Anything to get out of here.

Once she finished changing, she grabbed a huge jacket and ran over to the front door, locking it with her keys immediately.

"Jesus Christ, Phoenix," Kate mumbled, a look of uncertainty and astonishment on her face. "What the hell happened to you?"

"You were there when I got into a fight with that Sunnyvale prick, Kate." Nixie deadpanned, hiding the keys under a random potted plant. "Just tell me what's going on. Why are we going to Deena's?"

"That wound in your head wasn't there yesterday. What happened, Nixie?"

"Nothing happened," Phoenix mumbled sharply, praying that she would just drop the subject altogether. There was no use to talk about it, anyways. What happened already happened and them finding out wouldn't do anything well. "Why are we going to Deena's?"

Kate, who still looked unsure, turned around and started walking towards her car. "I'll explain everything when we get there!"

Simon stood in front of her, unmoving. He had this sort of look on his face that Phoenix has never seen before, so she cocked a brow in confusion. "What?"
