AT THE AGE OF SEVENTEEN, Natsuko Hayashida was married. It was an unhappy marriage— forced, unwanted, but necessary. Natsuko had the name and foreign looks of her father; and her father was the enemy. Who Christopher loved was considered uninhibited by moral constraints in the church and was punishable by death.
Natsuko is beginning to feel that her life has been meaningless. She is married to a man she doesn't love, living in a town with adults who hated her kind. It all seems pointless.
That night with her closest friend should've been a mistake— but for some reason, they couldn't stop. They'd meet up in the forest where no one would see them every night; away from the eyes of their town.
It was taboo. A sin. A love against destiny and fate. But she didn't care. She couldn't stop.
Because for the first time in her life, someone had loved her for herself.
