Here is a photography essay that I did in english last year.. Why not put it here?
Photography Is Not Only a Passion... It is Art.
Chance was thirteen years old when he picked up his first camera. That camera was always with Chance, dangling around his neck or in his hands. He started taking pictures wherever he went. His parents saw his pictures one day and pointed out how he captured everything in them perfectly. He had a gift and the eye of a photographer. After realizing this gift, Chance’s interests sparked in the photography world. The only thing is, he did not know whether his photography could be considered art. He wanted to be just as equal as the artists in the world that use paintbrushes and canvases. He would never know if that would happen unless he took the chance and tried to win the viewers over. People all know what photography is. The only question is, is photography art? Photography is a passion a person expresses through a simple lens. Art is the same thing only through paint and a paintbrush. The only thing separating the two is the way that it is expressed. So should photography be considered art? Photography is both an art and a passion.
Photography dates back 150 years. The reason photography became a form of art was because in early years, people had a high demand for art. The camera provided the assistance in supplying images and entertainment faster than the average paint and brush. (Students in the Seminar) With far away scenes and images, the device of the camera obscura shows the ability of reflecting far away images onto flat surfaces. This device has helped the artists paint far away scenes. Another reason photography has been accepted is that the camera itself has helped the true artists achieve masterful paintings and true works of art. With today’s art, you never truly see actual photographer’s work. The reason: Photographers are not well known. Not only that, but people never hear of actual photographers. Why is that? Photographers have to deal with the technology, science, equipment, technique, and timing. It is the fact that photographers have discovered how much they truly have to know, stopped and looked no further, because they were too overwhelmed with the photographic science. (Reflections) Photographers need to let their voices be heard just as artists have. Photography is only a new form of art only truly seen by the eyes, never the mind. It seems viewers never have understood the art of photography. Only a select few seem to understand photography as an art.
The qualities between photography and art vary slightly. The artistic photograph is created with the technique that is used to express the artists visions and emotions, not when the technique itself is used for the artists own sake. (Reflections) Each artist has their own style, technique, and eye for art. Every single artist must find a way to draw the viewers into the photograph in such a way, it can only be considered art. (Franco) The universal themes of all art and/or photography all have one thing in common. It must bring the viewer into the image (Franco). The viewer must feel as if they can place themselves in the true picture. Art seems to live in the strain between abstraction and description. (Franco) Every artist, whether it be a photographer or a painter, they all have the same goals. That goal is to capture the interests in the viewers. The artists must view nature as it truly exists. That is the true quest of art. (Franco)
Artists and photographers society seem to thing of them as the same. Yet, in this age, they are complete opposites. Photographers must use the scientific process to attempt to master the true essence of photography over their lifetimes. (Reflections) Artists have a direct contact with their subjects and have a canvas to use. A photographer is separated by a camera and their canvas by computers, printers, and darkroom equipment. (Reflections) Artists actually have brought in the device of the camera over the past years. For long distance shots, artists used the device of a camera obscura. This device projected an image onto their canvas to better see the fine lines for painting (Students in the Seminar). Artists and photographers also have one thing in common. They must contribute their personal spirits in their own creations to truly capture the viewers’ mind and eye (Students in the Seminar). Each person is different which opens up the world of art.
Different people think different things so there are different views and reflections on photography. Photography as an art is capable of expressing emotions as any other artistic medium. (Reflections) Artists must feel free to create and express what is truly inside of them. Never be afraid of showing what is on the inside of a person. That just proves who that person is. The best photographers are the ones that provide a description, but leave room for interpretation by the viewer. (Franco) Society believes that photography is not art because the photo is produced with a mechanical device and chemical and physical phenomenon, not by the hand and true inspiration. (Students in the Seminar) Others believe that the camera and photography would be useful in art, but photographers should not be as equal to true artists. (Students in the Seminar) Photography would be beneficial to the arts as well as the culture in areas. (Students in the Seminar)
The only impossibility to the art- if we are to believe some art critics who appear to have had little opportunity of observation- is that it can produce art; this little treatise contends that the camera is only a tool in the same that the brush is a tool, and one capable in the hands of an artist of conveying thought, feeling, expressing individuality, and also the usual attributes of art in their degree. (Henry Peach Robinson)
Photography makes the world of art open up to a whole new dimension. Each picture taken tells a story. Each one is an art that can express who an individual is. Photography is not just a simple person with a camera. The artists must have the eye for it. Photography is not just an art, but a passion.
