*Warning: Explicit Content*Beyoncé shuffled through the piles of paperwork on her desk. This week was the most stressful of the four months she had started her new role as Nurse Manager in her unit. As she continued to scan, her latest hire, Shannon, politely knocked on her office door, gaining Beyoncé's full attention. Beyoncé sighed, knowing all too well what the look on Shannon's face meant. "She's acting out again?" Beyoncé assumed that it was the problematic patient down the hall. Shannon nodded in admission. "I'll handle it!" Beyoncé smiled softly before returning her eyes to the papers.
"Thank you, " Shannon said before exiting back to the unit. Beyoncé looked up at the clock on the wall in exhaustion. It was 6:15 p.m. Her 12-hour shift was almost ending. This would be her last shift of the week before having four days off, and she couldn't wait.
The problematic patient was a young woman well-known amongst the staff. She was a regular, mastering the cycle within the health care system. She would check herself into the emergency room, telling them that she wanted to kill herself. Then, she would be transferred to Beyoncé's Behavioral Crisis Unit at the Texas Medical Center in Houston. Her anger was tough to deal with, as she cursed someone out in a heartbeat.
Beyoncé rarely got involved with the more challenging patients unless it got out of control, like in this situation. The charge nurse took a risk assigning Shannon, fresh out of nursing school, to deal with such a case. Beyoncé cleaned up her area, putting the papers back in their proper folders before walking out onto the unit and to the room. When she walked in, the young woman stood before the window, looking below the ground level. It was raining heavily. Beyoncé stood beside her to join in on the dim view.
"About time it rained in Texas," Beyoncé blurted out with a subtle smile. She loved living in Texas. The blistering heat was nothing for her. She spent ten years in Arizona, where the heat was even worse, but missed experiencing the rain. There needed to be a cleansing from Mother Earth.
"You ain't from 'round here?" The young woman turned to face Beyoncé, who shook her head. "You look like you from a rich neighborhood —with rich parents who spoiled you ya whole life." The woman tried to read her like the rest of the staff, staring intensely into her eyes.
"You're so quick to assume." Beyoncé slightly chuckled as she shook her head again. "I'm Beyoncé." She politely held her hand out to the woman. Over the years, she learned how to approach and dissect people —often using her skill as an extenuation because of her career, but it was a gage to see if she could trust a person.
