Beyoncé could not believe that her body was being so uncooperative right now. The moment when she needed to get it together, she couldn't and had to rush out of the private area to the closest ladies' room. Come on, Beyoncé! She coached herself as she stood in the mirror and looked at her reflection in shame.
On the other side of the door, Beyoncé could hear her husband begging her to answer his questions. Watching her run out of that room the way she did confused him. Their weekend was going well in his eyes. He just wanted to ensure she was okay, so he quickly trailed behind her to see where she was heading. "You have to speak to me, Bey... Did I say or do something that I shouldn't have?" Eugene's voice was laced with concern.
"Can we just return to our room for this talk?" Beyoncé asked him on the other side of the door, hand on the doorknob, waiting for a response. She appreciated all the money spent on food and decorations but could not have that conversation in that space. She felt more comfortable in their suite because she anticipated their conversation blowing up and didn't want to cause a scene in front of strangers.
"Of course we can, but can you promise me you'll tell me what's wrong when we get to the room?" Eugene asked in response.
"I promise," she replied before taking a deep breath and slowly opening the door to see her husband's troubled face. He quickly pulled her into him for a hug and then kissed her forehead for comfort. They stayed like that for a few minutes —cherishing that embrace since it could be the last. They finally pulled away and walked back to their room.
The couple changed into something more comfortable before talking. Once ready, they sat on opposite sides of the couch, waiting for the other to start this awkward conversation. The spirit of dread could be felt all over the area they occupied.
When Eugene laid eyes on Beyoncé nearly 15 years ago, he felt the attraction, a strong magnet that zapped him right back on the other side of the coin. She was the most beautiful young woman he'd seen on campus —ever. Granted, it was only the first day and nearly impossible to make his rounds on the large campus, but most of his classes were female-dominated. She was the only one that stood out to him. He was so lucky that she decided to sit in the empty seat next to him. He was even more fortunate that she continued to sit there for the rest of the semester and eventually grew from partners in their Anatomy project to partners by law, bound by holy matrimony.
Beyoncé had no idea how much her attraction was needed for Eugene because he was unsure of himself. At the young age of 22, he should already know who he is, right? He had been in love before; he had experienced what it's like to watch your seed grow inside someone and create the best fruit there could ever be, which was his Jr., and still— it wasn't enough for him to find his true identity. Or maybe he did, and it's his denial hindering him. Contrary to his past decisions, he told himself that he wouldn't force anything... only to do just that.
Eugene had no idea how much his attraction was needed for Beyoncé because she assumed that the love she briefly experienced would never find her heart again. Who would want a young, broken woman with a child? She no longer had Kitty Kat to hide her insecurities about her life or make her feel so on top of the world when she graced the stage. She was wanted in that world... Now, she hid to maintain her peace. She was successful in doing that —until Eugene. He was the only man that saw her.
That's how they individually decided to try to center themselves by thinking of the beginning of their love, but that was fleeting. The guilt washed over both of their faces like toddlers, wondering how in the hell they allowed themselves to get so far gone to the point that the probability of reconciliation being an option was slim to none. Counseling would have given them the clarity they needed before walking down the aisle. Unfortunately, they both thought that it wasn't required. That was a costly mistake!
