click.
click.
click.
i clicked my pen absentmindedly, looking down at the textbook below me. the lightbulb above me was flickering, and the fluorescent clock on my nightstand read 4:34 am.
crap.
later in the day i would be presenting my assignment, which i hadn't even bothered starting. i just sat clicking.
click.
click.
a noise echoed outside my dorm's window. i lived alone, so it couldn't have been a roommate.
click.
the noise echoed again. it sounded like rocks being thrown.
click.
the noise sounded a third time, and i set my pen down. tiptoeing over to the window (which was an irrational thing to do, as fore mentioned i live alone), and peered out the window. there was a figure standing on the sidewalk there levels down, poised to throw another rock. they let loose, and it flew straight into my forehead.
"hey, what the heck?!" i shouted down. the figure jumped, and rubbed the back of their neck.
"jason?" the figure said shakily.
"no?" i shouted back, leaning back to close the window.
"oh. OH. i'm so sorry i got the wrong room number and i've been throwing rocks for a while an-"
"dude. go to bed." i yelled down, letting the exhaustion creep into my voice.
"see, i would, but my friend jason was going to help me with my project for physics and i really need his help and i don't know how to finish it and it's due tomorrow an-"
"you mean physics in room 405 on the east side of campus?" i asked slowly. the shadow of the figure nodded, and then slumped down.
"hey, i'm taking that class! if you want, i can help you!" i yelled down, suddenly feeling productive. the figure thought it over for a second.
"sure! do you want to come down here or i'll go up there wait no that's weird uhm dining hall maybe wait no it's closed-" they rambled on.
"i'll come down there." i said before they could continue. stepping away from the window, i grabbed the pen i had been obsessively clicking, a half-broken notebook, and my computer. i got to the lobby, and headed outside to where i saw them.
"hi!" i heard a voice come from behind me. i whipped around.
"WHAT THE FORK DUDE YOU SCARED ME." i yelled, still jumpy. they laughed.
"sorry, i didn't mean to. anywho, do you want to sit in the lobby and do this so it's not dark?"
"sure why not." we both walked inside, and sat at a table. a weird sound came from their direction while i was looking over the textbook a little bit later.
they were clicking their pen.
like i do.
i laughed a bit, and they gave me a weird look and then laughed.
"sorry, just a habit." they said, returning to their work.
"nah. it's fine." i replied slowly, still looking at the pen.
we stayed there until around 5 in the morning, when they started to fall asleep on their book. i shook them awake, and we both went to back to our dorms. these late night study sessions became a habit, and soon both of us were passing the class again. both of us had also broken our fair share of pens along the way as well.
