Sage's POV

Something is wrong.

Gunner, Gabe and I had gotten over the fence with no problem, our feet knowing the route flawlessly. Ryder however is the last over, his foot slipping and landing outside of the designated chained links.

The silence is deafening, all of us holding our breath and frozen in place, waiting for the alarm to ring out.

Nothing happens though. I look towards Gunner, my eyebrows pulling together in confusion.

"What the fuck" Gabe whispers as Ryder shrugs and makes his way down to the ground, extra carefully.

We breathe out fog, the air cold in my lungs. I want nothing more than to forget about this fucking place and go back home to Dove. I look towards the direction of her house, remembering the promise I had made to bring back some of her personal belongings.

All the houses within eye sight are dark, not a light in sight, not surprising for this time of night. Only the occasional street light lights up the area.

"Gabe and Ryder, go to the weapons and ammunition bunker" I whisper to them as we huddle close to keep our voices as low as possible "Gunner, you get medical supplies, I'll meet you there in ten minutes" I say as I point in the direction they needed to go.

"Where are you going?" Gunner asks, confused as he pulls out the gun from his waist band, mine already in my hands.

"Don't worry about it, meet back here in two hours" I demand, holding firm eye contact with each one of them as I point to the ground we're standing upon. They nod in agreement before we give each other a look thats a mix of be careful and also goodbye.

We split off in different directions. Gabe and Ryder head off towards the east, their bodies disappearing into the darkness slyly.

A hand slams onto my shoulder making me turn quickly and raise my gun, I lower it once I realise it's only Gunner.

"Don't do anything stupid" he hisses at me. Any other time I wouldn't have let him get away with talking to me like that but it's the least of my fucking worries right now. I give him a nod as he walks backwards before turning and jogging behind a nearby house, in the direction of the medical supplies.

I scan my surroundings quickly before lightly jogging to the nearby houses, weaving in and out of them as I make my way closer to Dove's childhood home.

I get to the house I know her friend Penelope resides in, flashbacks of the nights I watched Dove from behind the fence walking to and from this house flash through my head, her mind so innocent of the outside world.

The lights of an upstairs bedroom turn on making me freeze in place. I watch as a silhouette comes to the curtains, pulling them open slightly and peering out. I hold my breath as Penelope scans the surroundings, unsure of what she'd heard.

It's only a few second and then she's pulling the curtains closed again and the light turns off. I count in my head and after two minutes I continue moving down the road, past the next few houses to Dove's house.

I walk the perimeter of the house; checking it out for any surprises even though I've done this more times than I can count. I find nothing and make my way to the front door, as always it's unlocked. The almost known existent click of the door opening is the only sound that's heard in the whole house.

Dove's father and brother's boots are missing from the front door, alerting me to the fact that they aren't home. The small womans shoes that lie there instead tell me that her mother is home alone.

I close the door behind me, my boots silently tapping the carpeted floor as I make my way up the stairs and down the hallway to Dove's closed bedroom door.
