Lorelai

"So, today's the day ..." I said to no one in particular while taking a sip of my coffee.

"Yeah. Today's the day ..." Luke repeated from his place at the stove without even looking up from the waffles he was currently making. It had been three days since April came to Luke's Diner and today, she and Luke would be taking the paternity test.

"Are you nervous?" I asked carefully. "I mean, I would understand if you were. After all, it's not everyday you find out if your life is about to change completely. Just imagine, after today you might have a daughter. Well, you already have a daughter. My daughter. But you know what I mean ... another daughter. I wonder what she's like. I'm so excited to meet her. Do you think she'll like me? Oh God, what if she doesn't. That would be ..."

"Lorelai!" Luke shouted. "You're rambling again? Do I have to throw my ladle at you?"

"Ladle ... dirty," I joked, and Luke rolled his eyes. "Sorry, you know me, I always ramble when I'm nervous. Okay, breathe, Lorelai." I took a deep breath. "There we go. Now I can go back to being the mature one acting in a calm and collected manner."

"Yeah, how's that working out for you again?" Luke asked with a smirk on his face.

"Perfectly fine," I giggled. "And thank you for asking."

"As you wish," Luke grinned while rolling his eyes before going back to work.

"I'm sorry, Luke. I'm still working on being the reliable one," I laughed nervously.

Luke put the ladle down, came over to me and kissed my forehead. "Lorelai, I love you," he said. "And it's perfectly understandable for you to be nervous. Hell, I'm going crazy here myself. But whatever happens today, we'll get through it."

"I know," I said and kissed my husband just as I heard the sound of a door opening. "And I love you, too."

"God, you two are like a freaking Hallmark Channel movie," Rory complained jokingly as she walked out of her bedroom and into the kitchen. "Besides, you do know that it usually takes two or three days to get the results from a paternity test, don't you?"

"That's going to be the longest two to three days of my entire life," I said exasperatedly while Rory laughed. She got herself a mug, poured some coffee into it and joined me at the kitchen table. Luke just finished making the waffles and then sat down as well.

"When do you have to leave, Dad?" Rory asked.

"The appointment is in about two hours. But I'll leave as soon as we're finished with breakfast. I want to stop by the diner. You know, make sure nobody's singing and dancing on any tables," Luke answered, rolling his eyes.

"You're never gonna let him live that down, will you?" I laughed. "It was one time."

"That we know of."

"And there were no customers left in the diner," Rory argued. "Besides, it's 9 am on a Monday morning. Who would even be at the diner right now?"

"Kirk might," Luke said. "And he'd be the first to start dancing right along with Caesar."

We couldn't help it. The image of that happening had Rory and myself doubling over from laughter. "Come on, Mister Grumpycat. You have to admit that the idea of Kirk and Caesar twisting and shouting in your diner – which as we all know is the hottest dance club in all of Stars Hollow – is just hilarious."

"As long as the two of you are having fun," Luke grumbled, trying to keep a smile from spreading across his face. "And I will now leave you two to your hilarity and go break up the dance party in the diner." He kissed me, gave Rory a hug and was out the door before we could get another word in.
