When I was young,
my hands were my tongue
and my books were my friends
As I grew up,
I became less like a joke that didn't belong
and more like a melody from a beautiful song
But my song wasn't heard by those with a tongue.
Then I found
Those beautiful keys
My fingers would glide and communicate with ease
The emotions that were trapped
were finally set free
My song was heard
and I was finally seen
But when I walked those halls
with a delicate ease
My fingers would glide
but the sounds had ceased
I once again became invisible
Much like the breeze
People walked past so noisily
The rhythm of their steps
and the chatter to their friends
So different to me
I was left alone
Once again
To be invisible
To be without friends
For those with a tongue could never understand
The way that I move
And the way that I speak
The silence that I sing
Contrasts with the noise around me
I'm a silent shadow
In a room full of people
For I am an oddity
without its equal
Then a boy smiled at me
Seeing the girl who couldn't be seen
And when my hands spoke
He just smiled at me
He moved his hands and replied
Understanding me
This boy was a wonder
A one of a kind
He spoke with a tongue
But understood these hands of mine
The happiness I felt
So beautifully free
My hands they moved fast
Like a bird in the breeze
They sang their song
And the boy sang along
Lips and hands
Together they sang
I smiled at him
When the song had ceased
He picked up my hand
And stepped closer to me
He leaned his head
Whispered to me
A song of his own
About a boy and a girl
Once alone
Neither belonged
But he told me
'Don't be sad
For they both have a home'
He told me home was in each other's arms
The boy sang to her
She played the keys
Together they sang
Music drifting through the breeze
Together they sang
into eternity
And together above
They looked down at the noise
Melodies drifting
But mixed with silent morns
But the boy and the girl smiled
Knowing that those people would be fine
Because somewhere on that earth
They'll find that there is someone out there
Their one of a kind
